After much debating and searching I purchased a complete D60 from a '79 F350. Along with that I got everything from the steering setup out of the truck too and also a new set of 4.10 gears since it has 3.50's in it now. I've got some work ahead but its time to say by bye to the leaky power assist closed knuckle low pinion 44.
It was a true 79 F350 but unfortunately it was a plow truck for a business. It wasn't bad to look at till you looked under it. Surprisingly the axle wasn't really rusty.
No more 3-point turns either, much better turning radius with the open knuckle 60.
This is true. With the 40's on even lifted some now I still have the problem with rubbing the steering arm turning right. Thats where the 3 point turns come in.
The 78/79 D60 is 1.5" wider than the earlier 73-75 closed knuckle 44's, so you'll get 3/4" more clearance between tire and frame.
I found that out the hard way when my truck would no longer squeeze between the fenders on my trailer. Good excuse to buy a deck-over gooseneck though.
DONT waste your time with the steering arm on the driver side like the stock setup. Do crossover steering right away it will be your best upgrade you can do to start. Any other questions you can just ask. I run a 79 d60 with 5;13's,crossover steering with hydro assist, ubolt flip, high steer, detroit locker, 35 spline chromoly axles with warn hubs. These axles are very expensive to build but in the long run it is very strong. I got about $4000-5000 into mine with all the above
