hi,boys
i'm new here, so bear with me. i recently bought a '49 f2 with a 226. she's in very good shape for a gal her age and i intend to spend the remaining years of my retirement keeping us both healthy and happy. but i'm guessing i'll be needing lots of advice from you boys. so far i've rewired everything with help from the shop manual circuit diagram. a new fuel pump and gas tank sending unit is on the way from lmc. i would like to replace the steering wheel, but i can't figure how to pull it. anybody know? thanks
Although some of the 48-52s did not have the threaded holes. I had to trucks like that. It was the biggest pain in the @$$ to have to drill the holes and tap threads just to pull the threads out because its on there so tight.
How far have you gotten? Horn button out? Push down, turn ccw about 1/2" and the button should pop up and out. Take the horn cup apart, carefully logging all the parts and drawing diagrams. Remove the nut off the shaft, releasing the horn cup. When you get this far you're ready to pull it.
The wheel is on the splined shaft so it pulls straight up. I get by with a harmonic balancer puller when I need to pull one.
As fiftytwo said some have threaded holes already in there for a puller. Some don't. If not, make your own.
hey F2, new here too but I have pulled a few wheels. Just got thur pulling one on 49 F2.
The plate on it was drilled and tapped (5/16 fine thread). But be sure to leave the nut flush with the top of the threads. Since the steering shaft is hollow, if wheel is tight (probably is) the nut will keep from flaring end of shaft. After wheel is pulled to bottom of nut, remove nut and wheel should come off fairly easily.
okie, better than using the nut I insert a large bolt and use that to push the puller off of. I've pulled quite of a few wheels off, last count I've had 16 trucks, mostly parts trucks.
