Water seperator drain..question

Under the drivers seat, when I open it to drain the water out,..will it stop when the water is emptied or will fresh diesel continue to flow?

In other words leave it open until no fluid comes out or no.

Thanks,
Shane

It is my understanding and experience that the water is on the bottom of the filter and the fuel will follow the water. You will run a lot of fuel out. it is wise to do it before replacing the fuel filter. Less mess.

I would not worry about the separator unless you get a light. I have been driving these trucks everyday for 8 years and only had one light . Drained some water and fuel an light went off.

Enjoy your truck . I have 22K miles on my 2011. Never drained separator once. Replaced filters at 20K.

I have a question. I changed my fuel filters last week. I took the yellow plug all the way out and nothing came out. So I am thinking cool. I twist the housing and fuel goes everywhere. The stupid thing was full. Anyone else have this?

I agree on what comes out of the separator. Been checking mine monthly since I got the truck and have caught the discharge into a fuel sampler cup. Can't see any water in the discharge.

I think the diesel supplement advises to drain monthly. Says to drain and if you get water let flow until diesel follows. I've done mine twice in about 8 months and have not got any water. Fine by me, tells me my fuel sources are dispensing decent fuel I suppose.

Ok, So it won't stop flowing like the 7.3 and the 6.0's did.

Just wanted to confirm.

Thanks,
Shane

It keeps draining.
The book says 25 seconds or until clean fuel is observed.

I've drained at least 12 times and I've never had water in my fuel.
Let the jar sit for a week or so. Water will separate from diesel fuel if there is any.
I don't reuse the fuel in the tank but it is useful for burning stuff.

Drain the DFCM monthly. Don't wait for the WIF light.
Consider that an emergency if you do get bad fuel but it's something you can prevent.
Set a reminder on your smart phone.

How many miles and is this your first DFCM drain?

I drained mine monthly for the first couple months and never had any noticeable water. I then waited three months to do it again - still no water. I haven't done it since. I think if I was forced to buy fuel from shady sources I would proactively drain it... but I think I'll just do it every 6 months or so. I'm all about being cautious, but so far the only thing that has gotten me is wasted fuel. YMMV

Semi-side note. hoe do you do this with getting an armful of diesel? On my 6.0 , once the plug came out it poured out. I did not know it would have stopped.

For a simple draining of the DFCM, you turn the yellow *** until it starts draining with a decent stream of diesel.
The yellow *** will begin leaking before it twists all the way off.

I couldn't tell you if I've ever seen the o-ring.
I'll pay closer attention next time.
Page 37:

3. Rotate the drain counterclockwise
until the O-ring is visible. Allow the
DFCM to drain for approximately
25 seconds or until clean fuel is
observed. Rotate the drain clockwise
to tighten it.

Getting ready for your video of how to show us a proper filter change, I see.

In all seriousness, that literally made me laugh out loud. Well played, Sir. Well played...
