I have a 351 windsor in the process of being stroked to a 408 windsor that will be going into my 56 f100. the crankshaft will be a Scat 8000 series crankshaft (4340 light weight), scat connecting rods; H-Beam with the 7/16 cap screws and the pistons are JE/SRP. Cylinder heads will be Dart, HVH or Brodix. Carburator will most likely be AED. The cam will be a custom ground hydrolic roller camshaft, not sure of brand yet.
I have a c4 transmission that i bought with the engine, i was wondering if this would be the best choice if not what should i go with? also i was trying to find some headers and was wondering if there is much clearance or a certain brand i can get that i know will fit and wont need modification? I am in search of a 9 inch without any luck yet. any advice and expertise is much apreciated.
I know sanderson makes some block hugger headers for our trucks that work well with SBF but they're pricy. I believe some guys on here have had good luck with summitracing block hugger headers (made by patriot) for a lot less $. The C4 would be a good transmission for your 408 but it will probably need to be rebuilt and beefed up a bit. You might even be able to go with a c6 trans cheaper than going with a c4 that has to be beefed up. They put c6 trans behind 460's and other big blocks stock so you know they're pretty tough in stock form.
Funny that I work for them now, but when I was building trucks we used to use BBK's equal or unequal length shorty headers for the 86-93 Mustangs. If your running a Must II, you just have to watch the collector and steering shaft clearence.
If you think you might be putting out over 300+ HP, you definitely need to beef up the C4. It's a good transmission but the C6 is what I would use with your setup...
Well just a thought but I used tri-y headers from a 67 mustang when I built a SBF ranger....... they hug the block quite well and the price is right......... as for the C4/C6 ... C6 is stronger but eats more horsepower... but a C4 can be made to handle lots of horsepower and you have one already so..... of course even in stock form the C4 will work fine unless you think you may abuse it regularily...... daily driver not many burnouts and it will be fine...... just because you have 700hp available doesn't mean you have to use it all the time
I will definately look into those patriot and bbk headers thanks for the advice. As for the transmission i will probably stay with the C4 since i have one already, does anyone know what it might cost to rebuild and beef it up? If the HP is available i wont be able to help myself so i better be safe and beef it up!
I've built a few trucks with Ford's 392 stroked 351 and we used built C4's. They worked well, but then these trucks aren't raced.
If your going to do alot of hiway driving, think about a 3.25 or so gear. If your going to just stay around town and have fun then 3.70+ could do just that!!
well, I just discovered that the 351w 'stroker' that was installed in my 56 BW IS in fact a 408 (4in stroke), with a C4 behind.. this will not be a dragger, or a long term highway driver.
now, how to decide NOT to do a 350 TBI chevy engine with 700r4 (not souped up tho)
If you think you might be putting out over 300+ HP, you definitely need to beef up the C4. It's a good transmission but the C6 is what I would use with your setup...
i made 352 to the wheels with a 306 NA if he is not in the 450 range he should be furious!!!!!
This is pretty much my motor, heads intake and carb will be different but pretty similar, expecting 550-600HP, really cool article on a 408w build, let me know what you think. I may take an occasional trip to the strip, but will mostly be a cruiser, will not see much highway time either. Might have gone a little overkill on the motor I have put thought into rebuilding the origional motor after i get everything done. But that could be years down the road.
