Just got my 460 running and drivable. My question is, is a stock dents puke tank just a puke tank or is it a return as well? I.E. to keep the fluid at a constant level. My truck never came with a factory tank. Does anyone have a factory tank if there is such a thing? If so does it have hot and cold or low and high marks? Thanks in advance.
My 79 f250 has one pretty sure it has the level marks, if it is not stock then the original owner put it there like 20+ yrs ago... Only my 4x has it my 2wd flatbed does not, I can't remember if it works as a return. To be honest hadn't really paid that much attention to it, just figured it was as you put it a "puke tank".
I will look tomorrow and let you know...
Go to the wrecking yard and find one that will fit in the space beside the radiator, be sure to notice how it mounts. Doesn't matter what brand car or truck just look for one that fits the space and is easy to mount.
I works by the antifreeze expanding when hot and siphoning when cooling off as long as you have a good seal, Fill the radiator to the top, fill the "puke" reservoir to just above the cool level marked on the side and your good to go. This is much better than just a catch can.
Adds a little more cooling capacity.
Ford did not factory install a coolant recovery reservoir in any 1973/79 F100/350 or 1978/79 Bronco, because one was never offered specifically for these vehicles.
All that was available, and only at the parts counter, was an "universal "fitz-all" coolant recovery kit that fit every FoMoCo vehicle that did not come with one: DOAZ-8522-A
A similar kit could be purchased at autoparts stores.
The only 1970's trucks that came with a factory installed coolant recovery reservoir (D1TZ-8A080-A) were 1971/72 E/F100's with the 240 I-6.
Two different types of reservoirs were used in 1973/79 FoMoCo Passenger Cars. One type (basic p/n 8A080) was just for coolant recovery. The other type (basic p/n 17618) was part of the windshield washer fluid reservoir.
Problem is I have to make a custom one. I did a power steering conversion and a 460 conversion. I only have space for a tall skinny puke tank. There is no other room. My thought is to use a aluminum or stainless bicycle bottle right on the radiator support.
I use a recovery/recirculating bottle from Jeg's (in Ford blue). For $20, it is cleanly installed after cutting and welding a new bracket. It's outboard of the radiator and inboard of the driver's inner fender.
