There were several GVWRs available. You would need to know which you have to know what the actual rating is. Mine is a 7600lb GVWR and I've put 2k in the bed and and it squatted Maybe 2" if that. The susp. seems like it would take much more. I have overload springs though so it's not apples to apples. I think you'll be fine with that little camper regardless. Just make sure your brakes are in good working condition.

would I use the GVWR that's inside the door?
the truck weighed about 5600lbs with me, my wife, and kid, as well as both fuel tanks full
Yeah the tag inside the door jamb should have the gvwr. It should tell you front and rear weight ratings. If you can get it on the scales you can check what it weighs over the rear axle empty and then subract that from the rear rating and you'll have your number.
Yeah, it does...........Is that off of the door tag? Is it the correct tag? Does the VIN match the frame # and title etc? That only gives you 900lbs to work with if it is..............

it was the door tag.
is 6550 a low number?
or just compared to what I was on the scales?
how much should these trucks weigh?
I think the title said like 4600 lbs

I don't know for sure how many GVWRs there were in 77, but in 76 there were 10 different GVWRs listed for F250 4x2s ranging from 6200lbs to 8100lbs. So it's on the low side of the available options but is not anything unusual. As you've seen, they can do a lot more than they're rated for.
My F250 4x4 has a 4500lb curb weight on the title, but I tip the scales at 5300lbs with me in it.
I'd say that if you have found a camper you want, buy it................load it up, make a few short "test runs" with it and go from there. You may have to add a few leaves to the springs to get the truck to handle it comfortably or you may not. It could be as simple as adding some air shocks or air bags to it. None of which are all that expensive. The biggest issues with a slide in camper are how you load it down once its in the truck and wind due to a higher profile. Just keep all of this in mind and you will be fine...........

so,
the springs are the only real difference with the different GVWR's?
I am pretty sure it's got the factory overload springs. (they look really hefty)
looks like this:
not this:

Reason: sorry for the huge picture
I dont think that they are factory overloads...............They look like an aftermarket set up to me. But looks like there is enough springs there to handle it to me. I don't suppose you have any idea what the camper weighs do you?

that's the big problem right now,
the camper has no badging (just one plate with a serial number): 105*667*1005
and a title that says:
Use Class: CMP
Mod YR: 67
Make: FBRT
Series & Body Type: 11CBR
the guy called it a 1967 11ft FiberTop Camper
I can't find any brand called "fibertop"
it looks like a SCAMP if they were to make a cab over truck camper
the owner hauled it in a 95-96ish F350 4x4 (and said it had no trouble)
my other issue with loading it up and testing it out is the fact that I really need new tires, my truck came with some 20 year old 9.75x16.5 tires (on 16.5 wheels)
I've already picked up some 16's, but am a little short this month to pick up tires)
i'm currently looking for some used "E" rated tires
