As you can see, the EGR valve hole is welded shut.
So, are we saying that His 04 has the flash in it that causes the fan to not operate right, when the EGR is removed?
Then if so, are we suggesting that when He was towing, the fan didn't operate as it should and caused it to over heat? And when that happened, he now gets white smoke on startups because __________________________!
I'm just laying all this out, cause I don't know the answer to what I left blank. I'm just running this through my mind here.
Would He find exhaust gasses in His coolant?
Easy does it there Jr, Fan no workie right. motor gets hot..... problems can / will occur.
Oops. I didn't really look at the pic, Just a quick glance to see the EGR port welded up. Anyway with out the EGR valve plugged in the fan won't work right,
Ok look, It's blowing W/smoke at start up because when you shut it off from driving it, You have no PSI in the cylinders (That are now hot from running and helping the warp heads leak), and not keeping the water out from the bad head gasket's / warped heads, so water leaks into the cyl, then at start up it burns off, it could be a sm, leak for now and could stay for awhile then one day you will be SOL. Do I need to spell that out for some of you. LOL. But you should see after a week or so low water in your DE-gas bottle.
#1 I've lemoned three Excursions 03,04,04 all stock, 03 had three turbo's 8,inj,and a few other things, 04's kinda the same I have a 4'' high stack of papers from all the times they were in shop, The best part Ford offered it on all of them,
#2 my 05 witch has ARP studs, and a secondary 2 micron oil filter, no EGR, edge sys, set on #5 (race mode) all the time for the best MPG, except when towing then it's in #2 or 3 and 9'' lift 38'' tires, 130,000 mi. same turbo and only 2 inj replaced, and just last week the Oring on the HP oil valve was bad and wouldn't start, Easy fix, not bad for a some what Modified truck.
BIGMOFO - sorry to hear about this. I remember looking at your 500 pic's of your teardown not that long ago.
I've had my share of trouble with white smoke and it was the turbo seals both times, BUT I never had overheating. This is worrisome. The smell of the smoke is important - fuel, coolant, burnt oil. Exhaust gases in the coolant? Puking coolant? Pressure test coolant system?
My best (uneducated) guess - cracked/warped heads or maybe just a headgasket leak. After all of that work, I'm sure you don't feel like tearing it apart again. Keep us posted. There are a lot of white smoke threads, but not one of a heavily modded truck IIRC (I've searched this so many times).
Well... that was short lived.. If I drive the truck around town it seems to run OK. As soon as I get it on the highway it overheats
It overheated between 220*-230* the other day and now I am afraid to drive the damn thing!
I wasnt towing and I didnt have any type of load on the truck at all. Could it be possible that I roasted a set of HG's? Whats up with this white smoke? I have the EGR plugged in and I never heard the big fan kick on!
**** - We are talking about a 04 here. They have a less then stellar reputation in regards to water pump failure. And your in luck too, you have to remove the fan clutch to get to the water pump. I would try doing those first along with a new T-stat if your coolant PSI is within limits. Good luck man Im rooting for ya!
the fan is easy to remove. i put a water pump on my truck in about 2 hours if that. not bad at all. therm is 15 mins max. like unreal04 said do those first. always nice to know that the water pump is new anyways. check coolant psi. post results. im still going on bad head or heads though. but all my luck is going toward you for just bad water pump!
Well Im leaning toward water pump/fan clutch. Mainly becasue hes hitting 230 ECT and the fan isn't coming on. I also Think his FICM maybe going bad too giving him the white smoke.......also im a glass half full kind of person!
I’m going to check it out, I would literally **** a brick if that’s all it was. I have been thinking the worst and really beating myself up over it.
I will keep ya'll updated.
Thanks for the words of encouragement.
Has anyone ever had any water pump flow issues, a concern bigmofo reported to me a month or so ago was that after remote starting truck and letting truck run in colder temps to warm up he would still have cold air out vents until he drove away, like a circulation problem, coolant level was visable in degas bottle, and now with random/rapid overheating makes me think he dose not have proper coolant circulation.
might. when mine went it came out the wheep hole. but then again that was after a 6 hour trip back from houston and pulling a load with blown head gaskets. id change it out its a cheap part
