Unhappy 98 Navi sputtering

Hi guys and gals, have a question. I am out of town right now and my check eng. light came on before I left. Brought it to auto zone and it came out with 2 codes (dont remember right now because i am out of town) any way, the guy at auto zone said he thought it was the MAF sensor because of the codes. I took it apart and cleaned it good, reinstalled it and still had the light. Now the wifey is using it and it starts to sputter at the lights while brake is on and wants to die on her. Any ideas so I can fix when i get home? will it leave here stranded with the kiddos? Thanks guys. Oh ya its a 98 Navi 4x4 with 158K

No posts so far huh. Hope you get home and use this site for help when you have the codes. You can use search and get a ton of info. I can at least make a recommendation since there are kids involved and you are away. Have your wife put a wrench in the Navi to fit the negative battery cable. Worst case if it dies pull over and take the batt cable off for a few minutes. This is a possible bad situation and not good as she will have no power steering or much brakes if it quits.

Had a similar problem and do not remember the exact code. There is a line that connects the PCV valve to the back of the throttle body. The line is attached to the back of the throttle body by a 90 degree rubber elbow. The inside of that elbow was ripped allowing a vacuum leak which was causing my problem. I could not find just the elbow so I ended up buying a new PCV line with the elbow from Ford for about $50.

An 8mm wrench is needed for the battery cable and a 90* spark plug boot will fit the tube for the vacuum, I believe.
Ford could have saved the world a lot of trouble by just installing a 90* elbow in that vacuum port when the truck was built. It might have cost an additional 3/10 of a cent, but the bean counters might have had a fit over the increased cost.
