Got a99 expy xlt wife just called and said she parked it and the shifter moved freely and the truck was still rolling. Now it wont start or change gears. I suspect the linkage came loose. Has anyone had this problem b4 and are there linkage bushings. Any info would help. It is 4x4.
Thanks.
There is an adjustment clip next to the frame rail near there drivers side of the tranny. it may have disengaged. I knocked mine loose while changing the rear u-joint on the front driveshaft. Oh yea it's right next to that u-joint. If you search about how to adjust the shift lever i think there is a picture. I reengaged the clip with a flat screwdriver. You should be able to shove the lever on the tranny into park manually from down there. Make sure the wheels are chocked. Mine is a 1998 4x4.
Ok, so i got a chance to look at it this morning after work. And sure enough once you pull it out of park it will move up and down freely, while still in drive. After a quick inspection i found that it uses a cable to shift the trans, no shift rods with bushings. Upon further inspection i found the culpret, under the dash the cable goes into a metal tube. The cable broke in two at the point where it goes into the tube and the exposed cable became kinked between the two pieces of tubing. I manualy put the trans back in park got it started and got it back home. I did find a part # for a shift cable with pic/diagram (7e395) about 70 dollars. Anyone been in my shoes before? How difficult of a job is this and are there any tricks or tips? Thanks

Same thing happened to me, but without the cable snapping in two pieces. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 10 I'd say this is about a 2 in difficulty. It helps to have a second person helping maneuver the cable. Other than that, the hardest part was getting the adjustment just right down at the tranny.
While you're under the dash, check the plate that the cable connect to for any looseness. Sometime the two torx bolts that hold it in place loosen and give you some slop in the shifter.
Got the new cable in on Saturday took about 20 min. The hardest part was handing over $75 for the new cable. The adjustment was a breeze and I also dialed in the shift indicater while I was in there. Everything was good and tight. Been sick last several days that's why the late post. Thanks again for the info guys.
