2000 Ford Exp. 4x4 AWD, 70,000 miles. The ABS light just came on. Checked the brake pads (checked Good) Brake fluid also (checked Good level). Both Advance & Auto Zone said they do not read ABS light/codes. So how do I figure out the code/problem? Any help much appreciated.
Hey ckstrawser Following is what I tried to say, sorry for my english as it is my second lenguage, I live in Venezuela South America
" Most likely cause for abs light on is the wheel speed sensor that sits on the top of the reaend housing. I have replaced many of those in my repair shop. Easy to replace."
Do you guys have a break down of exactly where this sensor is? And how easy is "easy to replace". I don't have to drain the Diff or anything do I? Thanks for your reply. Also any idea how much the part costs?
ckstrawser,
they aren't bad to get to. look for wires coming down to the top of the *jug area* where the ring gear and pinion are.
IIRR, it's something like a 7/16th's bolt that holds a clamp, then pry the sensor out. You'd want to clean any dirt away from the whole before pulling sensor.
Try wiping the sensor off and reinstalling it, see if the light goes out. If it does then change the fluid.
Ps. my sensor didn't look dirty but I wiped it anyway. Light went out.
I just had the same problem. It is easy to fix. The sensor is on the top of the differential towards the front of the truck. It is the only electrical connection coming out of the differential.
The part for mine cost about 25 dollars. The whole thing took about 30 minutes including clean up.
The light is an automatic reset. There is no code to clear.
For the cost and the ease I would just replace it.
Thanks guys, but still question is do I have to change or drain off any diff fluid in order to change the speed sensor? Vehicle only has 70K on it so if it is not required I don't really want to have to change it.
Hi guys. I'm new here and new to ABS repair. I just tried replacing my rear speed sensor (super easy) and I still got the ABS light on. Any ideas where to turn to next? Mine would come on intermittently(sp?) and then finally went on solid. This is on a 94 Explorer.
I have a 1993 explorer sport with the same problem. I think the locatioin of the sensor is up front, but I'm not sure. Can anyone point me to the correct location?
If you are talking about the rear speed sensor, it is on the rear axle housing, on top, somewhat towards the front of the housing. I just put the jack on the frame and lifted it up as high as I could. It took a 1/2" socket to get the bolt out. Took me all of 10 minutes.
