No, neither the red rear lights nor the amber front (parking) lights work when the headlights are on. Let me give you a detailed explanation of what is happening. My headlight switch goes from top to bottom.
Top: off...works fine
Middle...position 2...parking lights and dash lights should be on, but nothing.
Halfway between park and head the parking lights come on.
Bottom...headlights. all lights should be on but ONLY the headlights are on. The parking and dash lights turn off.
I can jump the hot wite to the terminals and turn the lights on properly.
I have tried 12 replacement switches from the junkyard. All with the same results.
I want to run toggle switches. Not pretty but will work.
I need a wiring diagram for it to know which wires do what. I can't find one to save my life.

Hi BigLoo, i wish i could help you right now but all of my little knowledge is based on research in forum discussions and alldatadiy.com database. I have a used 97' XLT since one year now. Without this excellent FTE-forum and the mentioned database, this car would probably be on a junkyard now. Upon request, i would send You electrical diagrams on a customer-to-customer basis for free and within minutes. The only thing is, that the wiring of an 97' is maybe different to a 88' model and i have only access to 97' diagrams. Sorry for being ignorant but i don't want to confuse You with diagrams that does not match. All i can recommend at the moment is to get a subscription for Your car at alldatadiy.com from where all of the required system -and electrical-diagrams are available or/and ordering a Chilton repair manual that contains some of the most important diagrams besides lot more information.

Help me, please...I'm begging.
The odds that all 12 switches being bad are quite long.
This leads me to suspect the connector may have a wire in the wrong place. Another possibility is that the relay is dodgy.
You might also want to check the switch with a meter
You can check with the public library in your area, often they will have a data base where you can obtain a wiring diagram.
I have the diagram for the 91, but not with me now, might be a day or two before I can look it up but I don't have a scanner.
I got the wiring and vacuum manual on e-bay for about $10.
