On the timing marks somone mentioned that if it was advanced or retarded some that might affect EGTs. ?? but it was worth a look I figured... On my old 6.2s I used to advance them just a tad for better economy.

They're very sensitive to timing. It affects power, economy, and EGTs...
The timing marks are a good for an initial setting to get it running, so that a dynamic timing can be done... Timing changes as parts wear. As injectors wear, their pop pressure drops as the springs get old, and since they pop earlier, they effectively advance the timing. As the IP wears, it builds up pressure more slowly, effectively retarding the timing. Both of these things tend to cancel each other out, but not exactly. That's why it's important to time the engine every so often, and to change injectors & IP together.

What he said. When I changed my IP (injectors were done 30k prior by PO) the static timing marks lining up didn't help too much, it barely ran.

Well just to add to this even though it's old news now. I just went up to Idaho to pick up a 5500 lb trailer and towed it home. Did OK. With the fuel turned down it was kind of a dog. My EGTs were more under control though. Still had to watch it a bit on the hills. Never could hit 10 lbs of boost by the way. However, the good news is that I got nearly 16.5 mpg empty and just over 13 mpg towing. Not bad I thought! That is with a ZF5 and 4.10 gears and 295/75/16 tires. Empty I averaged about 70 mph (turning 2300-2400 rpm if I remember right) and towing who knows but probably more like 55-60. I was at least happy with the mileage!
