I was wondering if anyone has swapped their fuse box to a newer style with the square fuses? I hate dealing with the glass ones. I don't need a whole new system cause my wiring is in really good shape, only 1 cut wire when I bought it. It was just something I had running through my head to do when I return home from deployment. Thanks!
I'm not running a modern-style fuse box, but I have taken out and replaced the factory-style fuse box before. However, I've done it with the wiring harness on the bench, and not in the truck. I can tell you that cutting out and splicing in a new fuse box (retaining the rest of the wiring) will be quite a task unless the wiring harness is completely removed from the truck. It would be difficult to get enough space under the dash to do the job. The wiring behind the fuse box can be as high as 10 gauge (maybe higher in some applications) and it takes a lot of patience and finesse to solder/shrink-wrap that size wire; I can't imagine not doing it on the bench. You could use butt splices instead, but it will not be as high quality. Personally I think this modification would only gain a minor convenience at the expense of your electrical system's quality, just because the wiring harness really has to be out of the truck to do good work here. Most guys who have a modern fuse panel have it because they replaced the entire wiring harness. Also, it's painful to see a nice original wiring harness get cut up; since an untouched one is so rare these days. However, that's all just my opinion - anything is certainly possible, I'm just sharing my personal experience.
By the way, I go through Cabot on the way to see my folks in Missouri. There's a pick and pull there along 67 that I always mean to stop at, but never had enough time. Ever been there before?
Well thanks for your insite. I haven't taken the box off to even look at it yet, but now I know I am looking at soldering wires which I'm not that real at. Like I said it was just something I was thinking about.
That pick n pull is the one I always go to, it is like 5 mi from my house. Some times they have a good selection of parts. I haven't been in there for a while though.
