Nope the filters flow up to 9 gallons a minute thats more than the heater core can flow so restriction is not an issue. the units are on f150,250,350,550 and 750 trucks as well as 30-50 pieces of off road equipment and a couple otr trucks that did not come with one stock.
I did talk with Baldwin and Wix, both told me that the filter media is different. They said that the media in an oil filter does swell and does decrease the flow rate. They both mentioned that the coolant filter media is more of a mesh on the micron level. Baldwin said you could use an oil filter if you changed it every 1 to 3 months, but otherwise there is not enough flow to force the larger particles into the filter.
As for my suggestion with the 4 ports, they both seemed to think it would work fine.
I have a 4 port filter head installed on my truck right now. I have it in a different, non-bypass configuration. I have it going from the block, to the filter - gets filtered, then splits to the heater core and transmission pre-heater. I also have a relief valve plumbed in to depressurize the system if need be.
I also have a fuel filter on it. The same type of filter the IDI uses but no water separator drain.
I heard it from a few people on this forum, possibly this thread and when I was looking at filters, the vendors listed the media as paper. Specifically "pleated paper;" Pleated meaning the layered/accordion design, I believe.
Yes pleated means layered/accordion. But just because it says pleated paper doesn't mean its the same as an oil filter made of pleated paper. Theres lots of different things they can do when making paper to make it more resistant to water or oil or whatever is being passes through.
After saying that, I have no clue if there are any differences between oil and water filters, but I would imagine its possible, but it may also depend on the manufacturer, Brand X could use the same for both, but Brand Y's oil filter might fail when used for coolant. There has to be some reason why coolant filters are more expensive than oil filters...
This guy disassembled a coolant filter and you can clearly see that the cleaning media is paper. As for types of paper, I have no idea. I imagine it is possible. I guess I will find out since I am using a fuel filter.
I saw that too. There has to be something different with the paper, otherwise how do you account for the different micron sizes that some filters catch?
I'm no paper expert but I would expect that the lower the micron rating, the denser the paper is. Maybe the paper is made waterproof by a bonding agent that is not used in regular typing paper.
I have a clear fuel filter inline of my overflow bottle and it has a paper filter. I have yet to notice any swelling or deterioration. It has been on there about 3 weeks, maybe more.
well i finally got around to installing mine after work tonight.
i'll need some heater hose now.but she's all bolted up.
this pic reminds me.iv got heat shrink ready to put on my cables too.
always something to tinker with i guess.
