Are there tougher axles out there for the IFS 4X4s?
I snapped a uni in one of mine, and in doing so, I trashed the axles on that side.
I've got a replacement, but I'm wondering if theres anything out there that'll take a bit more thrashing?
So would the bigger models have tougher diffs and axles?
I'm contemplating having a go at making my own u-joints with bigger unis in em just so they're tougher
If your truck is a f100 4x4, you already have a "built" truck that is not original. If you want to thrash it, slip a 85.5-97 f350 frame under it. Larger axles and u-joints, larger brakes, larger wheels/more studs, stronger rearend, stronger frame, but your body will bolt right on. The 85.5-up will give you the dana 60 straight axle frontend. If you need a tougher axle than that, the next step up is a military type axle.
Franklin, I believe the OP is from the Aus/NZ area, so a 4x4 F100 is not a "built" truck. Those guys never got the memo about changing the model name to F150...... Of course, they did get the real 351C instead.
So what you're saying is the 44 isn't so tuff and it'd be the next thing to break?
You said thrash. The strongest setup you can put under your truck easily will be the f350(or whatever they call it down there) stuff. I don't know when and if ever they put the large straight dana 60 frontend under the trucks down there.
You can keep using the frontend you have, it's plenty strong for normal operation. I don't know what you mean by thrash, I am visioning the worst scenario, and that f350 frame/frontend is the strongest one you can get that your body will bolt to easily.
There is no strength gained by swapping in a D44 straight axle. JBG sold chromo axle shafts for the TTB back in the day, but I believe they no longer carry them. You could have custom shafts made and step up your u-joint at the same time, but isn't the cheapest option out there.
What axle did you break BTW? If you broke your inner stub you can swap in the D50 inner, which is stronger and bumps you up to a larger u-joint. This is the most common breakage area on these axles. Otherwise, for as many of these axles that are available in the JY (83-96) parts accessibility shouldn't be an issue for you. Pull some spares and carry them with you. Also, if you're worried about the strength of the TTB arms box them in.
So is a D50 spline the same as the 44? and will slot straight in?
I like the idea of a larger uni. If I only change the inner, will that mean 'll need a uni with two different ends?
I've got a new (second-hand) inner and outer I'll replace the uni in it with a newby with a greasenipple.
Where do you guys get your parts from? We've got limited access to parts for these things down here.
Got any pics of how you have boxed in your TTB arms?
man if thats pic of your broken "axle" a heavier unit wont help, what you have is bad infestation of grease worms in your truck!!!!! seems they have eaten all the grease outta your U joints n let bearings fall out.
Cha1se, look in the "tips & tricks" sticky and find the TTB thread, it's a wealth of info and some really good reading. Also, the "inner" that dohc_chump refers to is the passenger side (or more accurately your drivers' side, right side, etc) inner that has the u-joint for the axle to "bend" (center u-joint)...yea, monobeam d44 really isn't stronger than the TTB version. I'd say stick with 35" tires or smaller and keep some spare outers with you.
Btw, I'm jealous, I'd love to have a right hand drive F-truck, especially a bullnose!!!
