I tow a 5th wheel weighing 9,200 # with my 02 F250 with PSD & auto transmission. I believe that the F250 comes from the factory with a transmission cooler. I have been considering adding an auxiliary transmission cooler. I was wondering if others pulling heavy loads have added aux. coolers, whether it is necessary, and if so, what type cooler is recommended.
The cooler the better, in my opinion. The major thing to destory a automatic transmission is heat. I installed a Hayden 679 on my truck and never have seen trans temps higher than 185 degrees F, even in the summer towing a 7,000 pound travel trailer. You may also want to consider a good synthetic fluid, I use Mobil 1. Also consider a auxiliary electric fan. I use my fan anytime the forward speed drops below 35 mph, works like a charm.
Search the "Towing" forum, lots of discussion on trans coolers there also.
I believe the 4R100's have a internal thermal valve that only ports the fluid to the cooler when the fluid is warm/hot. Mark Kovalsky can you help us out please ?
I notice on the really cold mornings that my TC doesn't lock up for about 4 miles. I assume that the computer lets it slip until the fluid temps warm up.

Almost. There is a cooler bypass that allows fluid to bypass the cooler when there is too much pressure. There will be too much pressure when i is cold (<0F) and the fluid gets thick in the cooler.
