spedometer cable grease?

spedometer cable grease?
Had a friend give me a sped. cable grease gun. He used to run a body/repair shop and said he didn't need it anymore. He said that it just hooks up and you put your air hose on and activate it with a drill. My question is does anybody ever grease them, if so how often and how much? Am kind of a basic shade tree mech. so I don't know that much about them.

I've never used grease on one. I've always used the liquid graphite speedo cable lube you can buy at the auto parts store. It would seem to me that in cold weather, grease wouldnt work very well.....................as far as how often???? I usually dont even mess with them unless the needle starts jumping or acting up.

Inside the speedo cable's housing is a woven steel core. It has a tendency to bind up inside the housing, then snap when the lube dries out.
Autoparts stores sell a universal core kit, Cut it to the correct length, coat it with a fine film of graphite, install it in the housing.
