Just writing because I had a concern about the fuel consumption on my 1997 Ford Explorer Sport. Currently I am getting about 280 KM's per full tank. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the problem.
I have found during the winter I get about 16 mpg's. I believe it is a matter of two things for us up north.
First is the increased idle time to warm up and defrost the vehicles. I noted one morning I lost 1 - 1 1/2 mpg on my AM warm up.
Second I believe that there is some form of winter additive to the gas that is supposed to keep the fuel from either freezing or condensing in the main gas tanks at the station. I've noted this the last number of years and usually around April or May my mileage jumps up.
I just noted that my mileage this last week (warm weather here in Western NY) I have just jumped to 18. 3 mpg on my last two tanks.. my previus 5 tanks were 15.9 - 16.1 mpg.
I am trying to drive flatter routes and use my cruise a little more, seems to be working.
wow i thought i was in hell at 19mpg ...of course the "elusive tornado" helps a lil' maybe in some twisted cosmic way. or maybe it's those 90$accel extreme 9000 wires and the bosh +4's hell i dunno gas mileage is kind of a thing of the past with me anyways...too many engine mods...
Milage Update (also see above post in this thread):
After replacing the gas filter, getting a T-Tech Flush/Fluid change on the Trans, and checking milage on a few more tanks of gas, I'm getting 20-23 MPG with mixed city and highway driving.
The truck has about 100K miles. I feel this is pretty good milage since is equal or better to the original factory specs.
But AGAIN.....I drive like an old lady on Sunday (as far as slowing down gradually when stopping and gradually accelerating until up to speed).
The biggest gain, I think, occured after that good, all round tune up. The second reason, generally, is just not being a Lead Foot (Leading Footing low mpg is exaggerated, I suspect, with the size of the given vehicle).
