What to do?

I have my trusty 1992 F-150, 300 I-6/5speed, 2wd.....And in all honesty, I do believe I'm losing my flair for it....I am getting SOOOOO tired of hearing "I'm sorry sir, but we don't carry products for Pre-1997 F-150's"......

It just irritates the living crap outta me, that our generation trucks, the actual trucks have no upgrades per say, yet a 10th gen. + plastic and alloy truck can get ANY kind of accessory know to man...

Another pet peeve: Through the thousands of dollars we spend, NO ONE seems to make any PERFORMANCE parts....K&N has a factory styled Air Filter, and there's a couple little tips an tricks; But no one definant set of parts that you or I can just randomly purchase and bolt on 10-30 horses....Just saying.....Not to use the trucks to race, etc with; Just a lil extra oomph to pull that hay trailer, or tow whatever with...

************************************************** ****
My question of what to do? I have been getting a need for speed, and I am sorry, but a TRUCK, with a STRAIGHT SIX, just aint gonna do it for me...

The torque is fine...just not enough ponies under hood, and no way to boost that....Without UNGODLY $$$...

But any who....I rarely ever use my truck as truck, and 18-20 mpg highway is starting to make my skin crawl....I know, I know, what do I expect, its a TRUCK....But seriously, if I never use it as such, why do I need it any more? I mean, for a DD, and my uses, I can easily go to a Mustang (Still a Ford)...And gain the lack HP, and mpg's....for roughly the same price....And truthfully, in the winter time, this 2wd, open wheel rear diff truck, aint goin any better than a lil mustang or similar car...

I have been roaming the thoughts over and over, and over and over....And I have 2 options:

1-Keep the truck, and sell a couple scrap cars, and get a fixer upper mustang to fix up (You can get literally THOUSANDS of parts for them)

OR

2-Sell/trade the truck and get a fairly nice mustang.....

Personally, I like option 1....But money is getting VERY tight with me....And I knw what most everyone that reads this is gonna say, "Why didnt I just buy the mustang FIRST?" Well...I kinda had a radiator, hood, a whole interior, and basically a whole truck and I would have gotten my asking price for it all....So I bought another one, and swapped the hood, and interior to it....And one way I look at it, I'm like "YES....Almost ready for paint, and then I'll have a pretty nice truck, thats paid off, with less than 200k miles...", and yet again, I look at it in disgust, because I can't get add-ons and what not for it....And if I do pay for a paint job, and get everything up to par for me, what then? It's not nearly old enough for the classic vehicle circuit...And not new enough to have a boatlod of upgrades.....So I don't know.....I'm just pondering and wondering.....Just tell me what you guys think.....Maybe I can come to a decision then...

Thanks all-
-Wes

This is what I am working with as is,....

This is what I want-

Something of this type....Hatch or trunk.....Either way...Just the 87-93 Foxbody style.....

I think 18-20 mpg's with your truck is nothing to grumble about. The Mustang won't give you better than 18-20 mpg hwy unless you get a V6 or 4 banger and you'll never be able to carry much with it.

I can see that....But at least it has a aftermarket following....You have to admit I was right on the bit about not having any upgrades for our trucks...

All those bolt-on goodies for the newer trucks are gimicks for the most part, the claims of 10-20hp and 5mpg gains are pure bull that simply don't happen unless the vehicle happens to be super/turbo charged. Now all the body accessories I can agree with there is lots more available for the newer trucks, but the newer trucks are also heavier and as a result don't get any better fuel milage than this series. As a mater of fact the current state of the art Ecoboost only manages 13/16 ish in real life driving so consider yourself lucky to get into the 20s. I like mustangs but you're kidding yourself if you think a hot rodded V8 car will get better than 20mpg, all stock they could get into the mid 20's on the highway but nobody leaves these things stock and nobody that doesn't have one foot in the grave drives this car sensibly around town.. you're gonna be on it every chance you get.

So what do I suggest? Get the car but keep the truck, you're gonna need it once the car turns itself into a trailer queen.

On a 100 miles even, from a top off at the petrol station, roundtrip back and top off again....5.1 gallons.....Aprox. 20 mpg ANYWAY you count it....98% highway miles.....So yea..Not shabby in my opinion for a nearly 20 yr old truck.....

But back to topic...I would just like to have some more ooph....60+mph is not a issue, as there is no reason for that speed if I am P***** and moaning about MPG....But 0-55mph could be better....Just saying...

Basically, my part list was a cam ( I posted a thread in the inline forum), a 3.55 rear end, a hurst shifter, and possibly a Centerforce Clutch....

And have been toying with the idea of a CAI that uses a MAF 302 intake Y, tubing, a 45* elbow, and a filter that is right behind the front valance....Mostly for looks, and possibly 1/10th of a mpg...lol

Also, will advancing the crank a smidge boost the torque? (Conanski) Jw...

i wish my truck 18-20mpg.. heck all im asking for is 15 or 16. best ive gotten was 12.5 combined and ive changed just about everything. you sound like you need a 5.0 or 5.8 f150. thats a bad looking little truck right there but it doesnt have any power.

if it were me i would find a junked truck with a 5.0 or 5.8 and switch everything from your truck over to it.

Yea, I know Jokey....I can literally visualize the truck in this scenario:

Its sitting in a random parking lot, and a group of ricers pull in;
My truck starts taunting them, etc, calling them slow P.O.S, etc...

Then I walk out of the store, and the closer I get, its saying "Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap....NONONONONNONO.....DANGIT! " As I get in and start it....Then the ricer cars are laughing their ***** off....

So yea....My dad 92', XLT, same truck as mine, with 205k miles, 302/5speed, with the camper top that came on my truck, gets the SAME mileage....Then again, unless he has an appointment, the truck never sees 60mph.....Just saying....But both are in reasonably good running order....

But my question is, if I can get 20mpg hwy, why not 21,22,23, etc? I mean, would running synthetic fluids, and a couple other doo hickey tidbits add up to a 22-33mpg hwy truck? If so, count me in....Personally, I see no reason why not....Just saying...

-Wes

My in town mileage varies from 14-16mpg...Depending on stoplights, traffic, right foot, etc...

How much man? Is it the SHIFTER and not just the ****? If its the shifter, hit me up in pm....We'll talk turkey...

And yea, I know CompCams, Isky, etc makes cams...Therefore me wantingn a cam...

Cliffords is outrageous high, and don't do EFI stuff.....

Fordsix performance, and a couple others have small doodads, but nothing to put a solid 20hp on the engine....It takes a LOT of engine work to push the horses outta the stable inna straight 6....Just sayin...

The problem is these trucks have the aerodynamics of a barn. There really isn't much else you can do other than cut weight. One thing, I'm not sure if your fiberglass hood is lighter than a stock one. The stock one really isn't that heavy. The stock tailgate OTH, is very heavy. There are probably lightweight alternatives.
The only other thing would be is to upgrade to a 5.0L. It has the power you're looking for without really a big mileage penalty. You may be able to swap in a good used one for about the price of some of those "performance" upgrades that are available for the 4.9L.
...or just look for a 5.0L equipped truck.
