'66 Mirror fix?

I've searched the forums and aside from duct tape as a fix can anyone recommend a better way to fix a droopy mirror situation? Seems a waste to have to purchase a whole new mirror. Is there a way to pop the mirror out and replace a bushing that the ball nests into?

If the glass comes out than under it there is a screw or two that will set the tension of the mirror head. I have seen some so bad that I have wrapped them with wet sanding paper to hold them in place.

how would one go about removing the glass? press the ball in from behind? pry the glass from the chrome backing?

If the glass has a rubber gasket ya can pry it out. If not it is glued in. Adhesive remover may work if ya soak it in that. Otherwise it will prolly brake if ya pry on it. Any glass shop can cut ya another. Replacing it may be better in the long run. But ya really got nothing ta loose trying ta fix what ya got.

This is the original style mirror that was introduced in 1955, has a replaceable mirror head. Ford changed the mirror in 1961, the head is no longer replaceable as Ford sold the mirror as a one piece assembly.

The repro parts sellers are listing this later mirror under the original part numbers (BAAA-17696-A, B5CZ-17696-A, B6C-17696-A and etc), but in reality, it's C1TZ-17696-A.

Once the mirror head begins to flop around, it's history...as its ball stud has had it. There is no fix except to replace the mirror (or just the head if replaceable).

Carpenter has this original early style mirror head listed on page 71 in his 1957/66 truck repro parts catalog (DC's p/n: B6C-17696-H) for $25.00.

If your mirror head has a stainless steel ring holding your glass in place, this is what you'll have to tighten up your mirror head.Take a flat screwdriver to the x and there you go. The glued on mirrors may have the same thing.
