Fuel consumption calibration?

My new 2011 f350 has the fuel used displayed in the dashboard under trip a and b screens, which is clearly used to calculate mpg in the other display. The fuel used is close, but reads a bit low (18.6 gallons shown but it takes 19.5 gallons to fill, for example) creating an "optimistic" avg mpg reading. Is there any way to adjust or otherwise calibrate the consumption measurement?

Try to fill up the tank the same way every time. If you top off until you can't put any more in, then do it that way all the time to get more accurate measurement. The computer is not perfect but is pretty close. The only way to get a accurate reading is to install a flow meter on the fuel line.

I think the computer does a good job to give you a estimate on how you are driving. Nothing beats the good ol fashion way of pencil and paper and some simple math to get the real MPG's.

That's kind of hard to do with the foaming and all. So the measuremnt us not done with a flow meter? How is it determined?

typically with the fuel injectors.
the computer knows how much fuel goes in on each injection cycle, then multiplies it out by rpms and divides by distance traveled to get instant mpg.

it has nothing to do with how much is in the tank.

to get the average mpg it averages all the instantaneous mileages.

if you only had a flow meter in the supply line to the fuel injectors then you would probably never get above 2 mpg considering the fuel return to the tank would not be taken into account

So there is no multiplier or bias value that can be set by the user anywhere to compensate for the apparent inaccuracy in this measurement
