This is actually on a ranger, but the donor pump is from an 84 f150, so I figure it's legit
changing out the ps pump and I have the pulleys off (one is sepentine, the other, v-belt). What do I need to reinstall the pulley on the pump? Would I have to remove the bracket and all and have it pressed back in, or is there a way to do it on the truck?
How did you get the pulley off? The special tool you used to get it off should put it back on also. If you did not use the special tool, the pump and the pulleys are probably no good now.
clean up the shaft with some steel wool or a scratch pad.
clean the inside of the pully where the shaft goes.
use the bolt that used to pull it with.
there should be a nut and some washers with it.
put the nut on the bolt and spin it up by the head of the bolt.
put a couple washers on next, then thread the bolt into the shaft.
draw the nut up to the washers and use two wrenches.
one to hold the bolt and one to turn the nut.
turning the nut and not the bolt it will force the pully on
The end of the pump shaft should have threads up inside correct? If so, a threaded rod from the kit should thread up into the pump shaft, and there should be a nut that you use to press the pulley back on by turning the nut. The whole idea is not to put any pressure on the pump housing, just use the shaft itself to install the pulley.
I thought so too, but the end of the shaft looks like a big Allen screw. Guess I never paid attention as to whether or not there were any threads in there or not. Oops! Well, hopefully this afternoon I have power steering again.
you have to look a little further in, the threads are in deeper. You can do it with a bolt, washer and nut, which is what the new ones come with. The puller/installer is typically a bit better, but the cheapy loaners don't always have the good installer bases.
I have a question about pulleys, are they all the same size for the shaft and pulley? My 76 F250 w/360, I need to find a pump, pump bracket & pulley. I'm looking @ staying with a ford pump because I'm sticking with the hydro assist steering. Any help would be great.
