My speedometer on my 88 f150 4wd is not reading properly. it reads 0 on a medium to heavy throttle. and at highway speeds with a very light throttle it reads 40-45mph, bouncing all over.
I checked the speedometer cable and lubed it.
I also replaced the Speed sensor.
does any one have any other suggestions?
when I replaced the speed sensor, i did observe the speed cable gear. i didn't notice any broken teeth. but I did notice the gear appeared to be cupped and worn.
when I first bought this truck one thing I noticed was the speedometer operated at 5mph below the actual speed. this due to my tire size. i am running 31x10.50Lt AT
You may need a new speedo drive gear (you can get one to correct the speedo error).
Maybe attach a power drill to the end of the speedo gear and see if the speedo reads steady, just to confirm that there no cable problems.
