I worked with a guy several years ago here in Georgia. His daughter was going to go to a college in Florida. He did the calculations and found out that he could buy a house near the campus and rent out the extra rooms (one was for his daughter) to some other college kids that she knew, and he would be better off than paying out-of-state tuition. I'm just saying that it could be worth considering.

Brilliant idea. Don't forget rental expenses are tax deductible.
Congrats Keith...to both you...and your baby!!! If she's smart enough to get into VATECH...she's smart enough to grab a good share of that grant and scholarshiop money that's out there!!! If they want her bad enough...you can even negotiate a deal with them. Doesn't hurt to ask!!!

Good thought...but...you may find that there are minimum requirements as to time at residence. It's worth pursuing however.
It might be the requirements wouldn't make it profitable in the first year, but maybe in the rest of the time it would. I know that a supervisor that bought a home near the university and rented it out and it paid for the house plus a little. So I would guess that the buying the house would at least be a minor profit especially considering the taxes. I would believe that it would be worth a serious look.
If Megan can get someone to cover her shift at work, she's supposed to go to a meeting that takes the whole day, on Friday, the 15th, on Va Tech campus.
So, I've scheduled the day off, to drive her down there on Thursday night.
Sofar, she can't get anyone to cover her shift (except her manager), and he said that he'd work half of it.
So. . . we don't know (at this time) if we'll be able to go.
(Strange. Every time someone wants to take some time off, Megan covers their shift, for them!)
Still, she's excited!!!!!! (And her Dad is worried for his little girl's safety.)
