I have an '02 250 4x4 with approx 20K miles. Recently I've noticed a squeaking or scraping sound coming from the upper portion of the steering column... most noticeable during parking manuevers. Has anyone else experienced this ? It doesnt happen all the time, but it's quite irritating when it does. I'll certainly take it to the dealer, but was curious if others have had the problem in case they try to blow me off.
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that does not appear to be the same issue.
What I'm hearing is a high pitched scraping when i turn the wheel. Doesnt happen when driving in a straight line nor it seem to be related to vibration. (not my keys either )
I had a squeak on my steering only when I would turn the wheel left or right, especially when it was cold outside. The noise turned out to be at the point where the steering column goes thru the gasket seal on the inside of the firewall.
I put some grease around the shaft where it goes through the gasket seal and that solved the problem. You can check if that is your problem by getting under the dash and listening for the noise as you turn the wheel back and forth.
My F-250 has the same scraping squeak that yours has. It's not all that loud, but it sure does annoy me. I'm going to take my truck into the dealer come Tuesday for that (along with other things...hubs squeaking...gas gauge acting up...truck shutting off for no reason...high RPM squeak), I'll keep you informed on what they say or do.
I noticed that all of us with squeaks in our steering are from Texas. OSB is from Round Rock, Munkey is from Corpus and I'm from Henrietta (20 miles SE of Wichita Falls).
Wonder what's up with that? Please no "Texas Jokes" unless they are really funny
I'm from Texas as well and I have the same thing with my 2002. Mine also only happens when it is cold outside.
I'm going to look into the gasket seal as it makes sense to me that when it is warm the rubber will be softer and not squeak as much. But I will need it to get cold again to verify the fix. And since I am not hoping for cold, it may be awhile before I can verify it.
I've never even been to texas!
But, I have that squeak in mine too! Now, it is'nt very loud like some say, mine's fairly quiet, almost exactly like the one in my '53, and it only happens every once in a while, only while parking or setting up to hitch my trailer.
