I saw in my 1994 ford spec book that ford had an option for a bypass oil filter mounted on the side of the frame it looked like.
anyone seen one of these?
If I find one I wonder if you can still get the filter elements for them.?
I think what you are talking about is the Luberfiner type of bypass filters. They are a metal canister filter mounted remotely on the frame and connected to the motor with hoses. Replacement elements are available. The last big truck I seviced had a Luberfiner and I got all my filters at NAPA.
No parts catalog listing for a by-pass oil filter for a 5.9L.
Well maybe it is only a 8.3l option. It is listed in the 1994 F and B seriesDiesel owner guide that I bought on Flebay.
It says on page 205:
"to change element drain filter housing and replace filer with motorcraft or equivalent"
"Remove cover then unscrewT-handle pack hold downassembly......"
"Add 3 U.S. Gallons of oilfor diesel engines to the crankcaseto fill the filter caseand element. Loosen the cover vent plug and start engine. When oil reaches the vent close the plug. recheck crankcase oil level"
The drawing they show it liooks like it has a nice frame bracket.
3 gallons?!? dang this thing must be big. From Ford description it doesn't sound like a spin on filter either.
There is a by-pass filter listed, but not for 5.9L's. Don't recall what engine it was available for.
When you asked about the by-pass filter element availibility, I went to the 5.9L's engine section in the '90/98 truck parts catalog to find...then list the p/n...there isn't one.

It's a luberfiner cartridge filter like hotwrench said. The number used to be 750 and has been used for years but very few Fords trucks had them in the later years.

I trust your word 100% on ford trucks. Ifi did run across one of these set ups I'd still be very much temped to see how well it wold fit on mine.
I always have like the idea of a bypass filter system.
