I currently have an 04 lariat extended cab with the 6.5 box, but thought it would be nice to trade up to a 4 door. Problem is finding a lariat trim or FX4 with the 6.5 box. Seem to be as rare as hens teeth ! I need the extra length as I carry items that are just over 6', but I always thought that the 5.5 was just too short to be practical anyway.
I have one on order. Should be delivered any day now.
When I was ordering, the dealer was all set to start searching inventories, etc, until I mentioned I wanted a 6.5' bed. At that point he pulled out papers and said, "Well, that will be an order!"

Apparently not a common configuration...
According to my knowledge and info gave to me...th 6.5' box is more and more common now and the reason you can't find them is because they get scooped up very quickly.
My advice, factory order or get buddies with a sales rep and have them search they're ordered inventory, and put a deposit on one they have ordered.
I've a Supercrew long bed on order. My dealer informed me that only about 20% of supercrews are long beds and that the short bed versions are worth about $300 more in trade.
Like yourself I'm moving from a 6.5ft supercab to the screw cab but I also carry just enough stuff that I felt a truck loses a lot of its useful value without at least a 6.5ft bed.
I did fret over the extra length when it comes to parking lots but I found many people with 5.5ft bed wishing they had purchased the longer 6.5ft bed and only one person with a 6.4ft bed wishing that they had purchased a shorter 5.5ft bed.
My '10 XLT Supercrew has a 5.5 bed. I just leave the tailgate down if I need to haul anything longer. The little bit difference in weight helps with fuel mileage.
I was searching nearly three hours last night to find what I wanted with a 6.5 bed. There don't seem to be many on the lots.
Of my local dealers, I found one or two but they were too loaded up for liking. The one truck I found that might work is over 2 hours away and has the EB motor - I wanted 5.0L.

I had the same problem when I purchased my 2009 Screw with 6.5' bed. Had to go to ranch country where ranchers pull a lot of goose neck cattle trailers to find mine.
My brother is looking for the same thing and they are hard to find. He is useing my son that sells Fords in the Austin/Round Rock area of Texas. He can search all available inventories and only finds a few. Call Drew at Covert Ford in Round Rock, they are on the web.

I have the 6.5' on my Supercab and to put in a Can Am Outlander Max, I need to either have the tailgate down, or remove it. If I pull the camper, I need to remove the tailgate. A 5.5' bed is not a practical option for my needs.
In my opinion, if you have a truck with a 5.5 bed, you are probably driving a truck just to drive a truck and don't actually need one. I ordered the 6.5 bed, wish i could have gotten a long bed crew cab but I wasn't going to a new 1 ton.

obviously there are going to be a lot of exceptions, but I agree with you.
this is, of course, only an opinion !
