Is it really worth it?

OK, so I'm a new member but I've been lurking for several weeks. I ordered my 11 F250 6.7 on 3/10 before finding this forum. Over the past 3 weeks all I've seen are posts/complaints about shifting, shuttering, stalling, making oil, DEF issues, Sync report issues and the list goes on. I found diesel stop and get the same feedback.

Is it really worth it? All I have into it now is a $500 deposit which I am sure I can get back. I need a truck to pull my horse trailer and I hope it will last me several hundred thousand miles.

Am I only getting the bad news and not any of the good news? Many if not most of you rave about your new SD trucks and it appears while some of you admit to having problems, you'd buy one all over again.

That's the problem... I don't want a chevy or ram... but I also don't want any problems. I'd like to know the $50K+ I'm spending will get me a relatively problem free vehicle... is that really too much for me to ask for?

First, welcome to FTE!

The first thing you have to keep in mind when looking at online forums is that people don't search out a site to talk about how great and trouble free their truck has been. People search out sites like this to discuss their problems and a possible fix, and this is the primary reason why many of our members find us.

Because of that you will always see things biased towards the problems people find, never the other way around. The vast majority of these trucks have treated their owners very well and have given them no reason to find a site to discuss their truck!

My truck has had one turbo replacement because I didn't like a noise it was making; afterward it was realized that that noise was a common thing to these engines. Otherwise the truck has been flawless, and the vast majority of issues we've seen are minor first-model-year issues such as programming and calibration.

For example, the only two common problems we've seen here have to do with the sensor calibrations for the Nox sensor causing a check engine light as well as programming calibration problems leading to some shifting problems. Both are expected to be resolved with a computer reflash, there is no hardware failure here!

Out of the big three we arguably have the best powertrain out there. Dodge is way down on power and has it's own issues. The Chevy Duramax engine is pushing the limits on an old 10-year-old engine and is also having emissions trouble.

Without knowing the exact failure rate, I can safely say that this has been the most trouble free diesel engine launch for Ford in a long time. The 6.0L and 6.4L had their fair share of mechanical problems by this point after launch; this thing is developing a great track record!

You will LOVE your new truck!

I think all of us have had some sort of buyer's remorse for one reason or another. It's not easy to commit to this kind of money and not second guess yourself. That said, Crazy is right about the majority of issues being the kind that can be resolved. This is the first year of production and these irritants are going to happen. My pet peeves are the shifting issue and the Sync problems. The latter is not just common with Super Duties -- all Fords are having this problem.

Despite these issues I am still of the belief Ford will fix them and more importantly I bought the right truck.

I have been a regular reader of this form since December 2010 and have been the benefactor of much information about the 2011 Ford truck and the 6.7 engine that is not available in the owners manual. There are some well informed people on this forum with good answers to good questions. Most all of them are good people, civil a willing to help with any problem you may have or even modifications you may want to make to your truck.
Having said that I have a 2011 6.7 with close to 8000 miles and have had absolutely no problems at all with it. I love the truck and had the same reservations that you have. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. I pull a 9000 pound loaded horse trailer and a 11000 pound 5th wheel better than I have ever been able to do before. Buy your truck, you will not regret it. Because I was nervous like you I did purchase a 100,000 extended warranty. Good luck!

I've had none of the problems I keep reading about on this and other forums. I only have about 5k on mine, and have yet to tow the 5th wheel. Average about 17-18mpg, would be better if I could keep my foot out of it, but can't seem to get through a whole tank without stomping on it a few times. Just added 2.5 gal DEF for the first time, no warnings, but the gauge said it was below 1/2 tank.
Previous truck was 2000 F350 4x4 7.3L, I hated the way it didn't want to start in cold weather, always had to have it plugged in. My 2011 F350 4x4 6.7L would start up at -5F after sitting a couple weeks in some serious cold without ever being plugged in, and never missed a beat. (I started plugging it in at night after my testing)
Only complaint I have so far; no dome light. The map lights in the front seat do nothing to light up the rear on the supercabs.
I'm still a happy camper!

If you've been reading, I have some of the issues. Primarily the transmission issues and I have a left pull issue. But, i've found a dealer who has been excellent so far with regards to the left pull issue and I expect resolution when I take it in tomorrow. Also, there's a resident expert here from Ford in Paul Bruckne and he's provided detail that a fix is in the works for the shifting issues. Having said that, this is hands down the best truck I have ever owned and I have not for one second regretted my purchase. The day your truck arrives you will know you made a great choice.

I have the transmission shifting issues but I know Ford is working on a fix that hopefully resolves this issue.
Despite the shifting, I drive the truck and while I don't want future damage because of the current issue, I am happy I purchased the Ford.
I wouldn't give it up. 13,900 miles.

wtrlogd, I do agree with you about the supercab lighting although maybe it's always been dark in the back.
I know it's an easy fix to add a light or use a flashlight but Ford could have added a light for a few dollars more to the build process.

I have owned my 2011 since June. The truck has 24000 miles on it now. I have not had the two issues that could be called recurring but are still low in number. I have had two problems. The first, at 3500 miles was a failed engine fan clutch. Last week I had a CEL that turned out to be the fuel injector on cylinder one. It gets a new injector tomorrow.

Keep in mind that the warranty repair rate on the 6.7 engine is less than 1 repair in every 1000 engines. I guess that means I have 2000 of you guys covered...

I have not had 1 second of buyers remorse. Every time I get in the truck I smile. It is a blast to drive. Nothing this big should be this much fun to drive...and get great fuel economy at the same time. It tows my fiver far better than my 2004 F250 6.0 ever did and I had a heavy tow tune on that truck.

Stop worrying...when that beauty arrives you will know you made the right decision.

Regards

I too had worries but I know these problems you see here aren't as prevalent as it might seem. I have driven two demos and I can't wait. To this day I love getting in my 2000 ford 7.3 and driving down the road. The one I have ordered has my 2000 blown away. I sure hope my new truck comes in next week like promised. I love Ford trucks and would not buy any other....

Do as you will but I would keep the Ford...

Just got my new 2011 F250 6.7l Lariat. Absolutely love it. Only 600 miles so far but man it is a sweet ride. I wouldn't freak yourself out because of people working through problems here in the forums, seems like the reason you post is often to figure out an issue, so the people who are trouble-free aren't as noisy here. You're gonna love your truck.

I have 700 kms on my 350 and so far it rocks! Drove the Chev - nada, too bland in spite of a solid drivetrain. Didn't drive the Dodge but my buddy just bought a brane new 2011 Laramie the same week I bought mine. His is a nice truck and has all of the creature comforts of the Ford but it doesn't look anywhere as good, is louder, rougher and only has 650 ft-lbs. Plus, it wasn't any cheaper and he got a smokin deal (as did I on my X-plan Ford).

I got a little freaked out as well after coming to the forums but the beauty of knowing the issues, is also knowing how to avoid them in the first place (if possible) and knowing that there seems to be a simple fix out there for almost every issue encountered to date.

Afterall, this isn't the first engine and tranny Ford has designed.

I just passed 1600 miles on my 6.7. In my 4th week of ownership on a Job 2, Nov-29th-2010 build truck. It is my 3rd F350. The first 2 were V10 gassers as I was not fan of the Navistar lumps.

I love this new truck. My mpg has doubled over my previous 2 trucks.

I have had NONE of the reported issues written of here on the FTE. So far my truck has met and exceeded my expectations for new vehicle performance, reliability, and features at a competitive price point.
