So I fired it up and drove it around a little bit today with nothing but downpipe for an exhaust system. It sounded fantastic.
I've decided that I'm definitely not bridging the gap to the rest of the exhaust system. I'm either going to turn it out past the skid plate or put on a turndown right past the skidplate. Is anybody here running exhaust like this?
I ran all last week with just the down pipe. Yes it sounds awesome but it gets old after a while. I'd at least try to get it to the transfer case so there is no chance of the heat melting the wiring/connector on the side of the trans.
I decided that I'm going to turn it out right where the frame turns up. That way, I don't have to worry about getting the pipe under the frame. I think it's like three or four feet rearward of the downpipe. So I'll be putting the exit point quite a bit downstream.
I never finished my exhaust, but I'm looking to do so now. So here's a bump to get this back to the top. I'm lining up parts to get my exhaust to exit in front of the rear wheel.
Well, not the best pics, but here's what I've got for ya. These first two are pictures of the rear hanger I modified, you can see I cut it off and bent and welded a new J under the pipe. Welded to the plate I bolted on the frame. You can also see the little bit of black it puts on my lower fender. I may drop it sometime a little bit, but not too worried about it. You can also see the short piece I added to the elbow, I mention more on that later.
Here is a picture of how the front hanger is on
Here is a pic of the length of pipe, between the two welds is the short piece I added between the 4' piece and the elbow. It's only about 8 inches long. Then there is another short piece on the end of the elbow to reach the outside of the truck. About the same length. I'd guess if you just got one 4' piece and a 3-4 inch adaptor, you'll be about a foot farther ahead than mine, give or take. You would need to cut a piece off of the 4' chunk to put on the end of the elbow to reach the outside of the truck so it will shorten that up. If I were you, I'd get two four foot pieces, they aren't that spendy.
If you don't have a welder, you can buy clamps to use to put the pieces together, then you will have to figure out how you want hang it. Maybe check with an exhaust shop, see what options for hangers they have.
Thanks, especially for the pictures. Can you guys school me on I.D. pipe versus O.D. pipe? I'm thinking that when I see 4" O.D. pipe, that the 4" is the diameter measured to the outside of the pipe, which would make it smaller in diameter than 4" I.D. pipe, which would be the diameter measured on the inside of the pipe. Am I correct in saying this? Also, if I buy a length of straight pipe, would that be O.D. or I.D. typically? The pipe I'm looking at doesn't specify.
You guys think 4' will be enough pipe to clear the frame on the back there?
I believe its measured on the outside. If you just get 4 inch exhaust and an adaptor from 3-4 inch you will be fine. I don't know how long a 3-4 inch adaptor is, but if its only about 6-8 inches, you're going to need a short piece like I mentioned for the end of the elbow so with just one 4 footer, it will probably exit under the extended cab, or maybe just between the cab and the box.
This straight pipe setup is loud for sure, if it came out under the ext. cab it may be REAL loud in the cab.
When you get ready to do this, let me know with a pm or something, I know I have some 4 inch pipe around, I'd send you a short piece so it can go back a little more if you pay the shipping. Then you can just buy one 4' piece. I'm pretty sure I've got a full 4 footer and a stubby I'd cut a piece off for you.
I'm running the factory downpipe only right now. Straight pipe in front of the rear wheel can't be too much louder than that, can it? I'll be running that exhaust with a 3" downpipe.
I'm going to order up the parts for the exhaust work tonight, so I'll send you a PM while I'm compiling the order.
I'm just going to order two 4' lengths of 4" pipe. I can't seem to get a straight answer out of anybody I talk to about whether your typical straight pipe is measured with O.D. or I.D. I'm a little scared to order my reducers and such without that knowledge. I'm guessing that most straight pipe is O.D.
most stuff ive bought has been OD diameter so from outside edge to outside edge like you said. i wish i could be of more help but my truck came with a straight pipe already on it that exits in front of the rear passenger tire....
you can see it exit if you look at that rear tire
also if you buy the wrong size, slit it like a cross and flare it until you can get it welded.
