loose head bolt removal

Hey anyone out there ever get to torquing the head bolts and the bolt turns free? Just happened to me last week after replacing gaskets. NO indicator of wear or damage to heads or bolts, hell I even taped the bolt holes but no probs. When I got to putting down torque bolt spun free an d now I can't pull out so any advice would help.

Not a good idea to clean threads with a re-threader. There's a thread chaser for that. Taps have a tendency to remove extra material. Did you reuse the old bolts or get new ones?

To remove the one that's stuck, find a way to apply pressure beneath the bolt head when turning it. Anything thin you can get under the head with. Or, there's a socket system that has a tapered reverse cut thread inside used for removing rounded off bolts that will "grab" the bolt head and might be enough to pull it out.

I'm thinking you may have stripped the threads in the hole or the bolt itself and the stripped material is hanging it up in there.

I Used old bolts but against my better judgment I reused them instead of buying new. Well I guess I can get new hardware this weekend after I kick myself.

Not yet, I can only get out to the shop on sundays so my time is very limited. I should have them out by sunday afternoon and then I can torque them down, slap on the carb and wires and should be ready to fire.

New Problem

Got the bolts out and took off heads and intake to see whats going on. seems that the bolt hole is barley threaded inside which is why it will not tighten up. I even chased the threads but no good. Was thinking if I could use helicoil or something because I dont think tapping out to a larger bolt will happen. Oh I dont know anyone out there got some advice for me?

I'd talk to a REPUTABLE machine shop. There are better thread repairs out there than helicoils. Helicoils are fine for most applications, but I wouldn't reccomend them for a head bolt..............
