Hi I have a 1996 F150 5spd with the 4.9. I was just wondering which would be the best muffler for my truck. I was just wondering what would be as loud as possible (its got two cats) without decreasing my mpg. Right now I have some generic magnaflow on it and, although louder than stock, its still pretty quiet. I remember hearing something about flowmaster 10 series.
I had a muffler shop put on the muffler only a couple years ago so I think it would be a while before I could justify getting a new one.
Ok, there is no such thing a s generic Magnaflow, but I know what you mean.
The stock cats will make it pretty tame with most options.
I do not typically endorse removing cats, however, you setup does not need both of them from a technical standpoint.
In the realm of loud mufflers, yes, the FM 10 series will have some mean bite, but they are aluminized and will rust. The new Kamikaze mufflers that WickedFlow is putting out are a bit more expensive than the Flowmaster 10 series, but has two major advantages. First, it is all stainless steel, so its not going to rust, second it has no baffles at all, so its going to be loud. It is pretty much straight through with no packing or baffles. They are about as loud as you can legally get.
Just drop the muffler and run stright pipes off the converters. I ran my 1990 F150 with the 4.9/5sp for 17 years like that....sounded like a quiet V8 (louder than with a muffler but not tinny/raspy), had a nice rumble both on & off the gas.
