i'm rebuilding my c6. i've got a video that is very helpful and a hayns transmission manual that covers this c6. i still have some questions.
should i change all the bushings? the video and manual talk about looking for scracthes and discoloration due to heat and such and to change those that are damaged. what about the bushings that might be too worn. they don't tell me how much is too much wear.
the samething goes for the brass thrush washers. should all of them be replaced? in my case, all are worn but none are discolored or scratched.
the video says that some units use more friction disks then others. if i order a rebuild kit, how do it specify how many disks i need?
other than these questions, this transmission isn't so complicated.
this is a project and so far i';m glad i've taken it on.
thanks for you help.
I dont know if there is a mileage rule of thumb to change those, but my transmission had 165,000 or so on my old truck and I rebuilt it without changing any bushings except the one in the end of the tailhousing. I dont think you would need to, but its hard to say. Replace thrust washers, they're easy Most rebuild kits come with the maximum number of clutches and steels, and you use just what you need. That's how mine was. And it is a satisfying feeling to rebuild your own tranny for sure!
I always replace the rear ext housing bush and the front pump/convertor bush as these suffer the most wear..The other bushes only if they show excess wear. Also check the bush in the rear of the case as these sometimes spin in the case.If this happens Sonnax do an oversize bush .
