Help: Truck dies while driving
2001 F250 7.3L Auto 4wd
A little history...once or twice the truck wouldn't start. Had power, but then turn the key and nothin. So I remembered a trick from my old 84 Mustang...left the key on, got out, and popped the two terminals of the solenoid with a screwdriver, and it started right up. This has been happening more frequently, but randomly (can go all week and never happen or it can happen 3 times a day).
Then yesterday, driving about 50, the truck just dies. I shifted into neutral real quick, shut it down and cranked again, and it started up and ran just fine. Then it happened again today. I've scoured through posts about ICP sensors and ignition control modules but I'm at a loss. Any ideas to get me going will be greatly appreciated.
This sounds just like the way failing CPS would. Suddenly shuts the truck off like someone turned the key.
They will replace it for free but there are better ones for about $25. I always carry a spare in my glove box just in case. Or you can check out RiffRaff deisel and just buy one from Clay. They are easy to replace. 10mm socket & ratchet. Unplug one harness, one bolt to remove then replace and plug it back in. It is located on the lower/front of the motor right behind the main pulley.
Now as far as having to jump the solenoid, that to me seems like a bad solenoid. But that shouldn't have any effect on the truck shutting off unles you have a real bad ground somewhere.
You should also try the 1999 - 2003 7.3L Power Stroke Diesel forum. Great knowledge there.
Also, dunno if this is coincidence or not, but I just noticed a small oil leak under my truck. It seems to be coming from the rear of the oil pan, but I can't tell which side, but there's some pretty oily electronics under there now and I don't know what all that is.
If you do a search in the other forum for HPOP you will find a pic on where it is and what plug to pull to check the level and TONS of threads on it. Also info on the oil leak.
I just joined the forum today to ask about the same problem. I have the same truck as the original poster. Mine always starts up fine. Then if I'm breaking or sitting at a stop light for a longer period of time it will cut off. So far it has always started after cutting off. Some days it doesn't do it at all, some days only once, some days multiple times and every time it's when I'm slowing down or stopped, never when I'm driving. It's extremely frustrating!! Sometimes when it happens after cranking it again the service engine light comes on and stays on until I shut off the truck but the next time I crank it the light isn't on.
Does this sound like the same problem as the original poster? The fuel filter is due to be changed and I didn't know if that will make a difference. Just thought I'd ask here before bringing to a shop.
Thanks in advance!

Check the fuel filter as you are thinking. Could be clogged especially if you had any fuel gelled issues in the recent past.
When I switched mine out I was lucky it wasn't on the road side. Mine seemed to "skip a beat" when I was heading to my inlaws about 3 yrs ago for Christmas. I pulled in the driveway and it died. I just changed it out and haven't had an issue since.
