I cant figure out what i have for a rear end. But the back plate is not removable. To get to the gears i have to unbolt the front cover. Does anybody kno what this is for a rear end.

I would think it's a Dana 44 rear end, Look for the number 44 stamped on the right lower rear corner of the rear end, then look along the right axle tube stamped in the metal for the manufacturing date followed by the material number (6 digit number followed by a dash number). The axle model number will be cast in one of the webs and or on the nose of the axle.
If there is no inspection cover (on the backside of the housing), it's a 9" as this was the only rear axle w/o an inspection cover installed in 1957/83 F100's, 1975/86 F150's.
Cover coming off the front is a mis-nomer, because there isn't one. The carrier (aka pumpkin) bolts to the housing.
The carrier is what the OP is actually referring to.
Tatt2biker: The fact it's an F150 doesn't mean it only came a 9 inch.
1977/79 F100/150's: Ford installed Dana 44 rear axles in some of these trucks in an effort to improve fuel economy after the first Arab Oil Embargo ended in 1974.
thanks for the help. There is no stamp on this rear end that's why i was asking. I have to take the whole driveshaft assembly out to get to the gears. Its a pain in the ***.
