I use rottella 15-40 and change oil at 3000 mi's, 258xxx and injecters still going strong never been touched and the oil still not turned black, looks like a gas engine oil.

My engine's got 225kish on it, and I change with Rotella every 3k. It's starting to near the end of an oil cycle, and the oil still looks astoundingly good. I don't think my truck had very frequent oil changes when the previous owner had it. The oil that was in the pan when I bought it was very black, and the first time I changed the oil, it turned black almost immediately. The oil's still looks nearly fresh on this cycle, though.
On the farm I worked at over the summer, we used Rotella on anything that ran on diesel and even a few of the gasoline engines.
Oh, yeah. My truck definitely runs much better on fresh oil. It's well known that these trucks run like garbage on bad/old oil.
It's actually better oil for the old gas motors than the new 10w30 stuff is. If it wasn't so cold up here in the winter I'd run it in my 76. About the only time I drive it is in the winter though and as you know it is pretty thick cold. If I drove my diesel in the winter I'd try synthetic some. I don't drive it hardly at all so not worth it in my opinion.
