Question about Motor Oil and Fuel Additives for the good old 7.3

I have a 97 with 140,000 miles. As of now I run Rotella HD motor oil and Lucas as a fuel additive, change oil every 4000 miles. I want my truck to run the best it can and I have heard good and bad about Rotella and Lucas. So I want to hear from you guys what is the best motor oil and fuel additive there is to use and the benefits you guys have seen. Thanks for the advice in advance.

That will tell you bout the best additive. It is XPD from OptiLube... well if you can't run biodiesel that is... I can't find B fuels anywhere round me so... For power and fuel economy, i like redline 85 plus, but I have no idea what the lubricity benefits are.

For oil, i recommend AMSOIL. I wish I still had a copy of the fleet study that they did, but basically I emailed them wanting to know if I could get sponsored with some oil from them to gather some of us together and do studies using their products in our trucks with daily driving and tow/hauling. They sent me a bundle of info where they had contracted this waste disposal company who was running I believe shell rotella in their fleet, and had to rebuild their motors like every 100k miles or something... Anyhow, they ran amsoil for 100k in these trucks doing regular filter changes but keeping the same oil, and proved through lab testing that their oil was good for upwards of 130k miles. They offer a full bypass system that relocates your oil filter and adds a second 2 micron filter in the same mount. run that bypass setup with amsoil hd diesel oil and you probly won't ever have to change the oil again. I have heard from a few people who have noticed a gain in mpg by switching to amsoil as well, like 2-3%. This is exactly what I am going to do once I find the cash to buy everything for the changeover. because im running a Mobil 1 CF grade oil now, so I want to run the amsoil through the motor for regular OCI, then swap it out for new so that I dont have 3 quarts of old mobil floating around in there...(hpop system) So that's what I recommend bud, as for the additive, read that lab test and STOP RUNNING LUCAS!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaah stuff is horrible... hope this helped bud

Shaffers does the same thing with their oils too.

As for lucas products, I dont recommend them for anything.
I have no idea how they do good in the industry with such poor *** products and only hype to drive them.

best additive you can by is two cycle oil for your diesel. makes a world of difference in how it runs. i just found out about a month ago and i run it in the truck every fill up. its cheap. i get the marine two-cycle from wal mart in the blue bottles.

I used to use rotella T in my truck then i switched to John Deere 15-40 Plus II and it seems to idle a little smoother now as for fuel additives i have been using diesel kleen in the gray bottle in the summer and a mix of the white bottle and howes in the cold winters of North east Montana and the truck has 236,000 miles on it with stock injectors

Shaffers fuel additive is really good at preventing gelling.

gelling is only a wintertime thing right? I live in cali so I never get into temps where gelling would become an issue. But anti-gelling additives are notorious for having a lower lubricity benefit and also power robbing... If you're not too worried about getting the higher cetane performance, the two-stroke oil seems a good way to go... if you have a pile of money laying around, I would run the optilube for performance and lubricity. Optilube also makes a winter formula of the XPD that has anti-gelling additive in it, but again has a lower lubricity benefit, and lacks the power advantage because of that additive. Any time except winter where you will see gelling, I wouldn't run an anti-gelling additive. Just my $.02

My opinion is to use a good oil and change it regular. Here's what the UOA from Blackstone looks like in my 7.3 when it had 320,000 miles on it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...000-miles.html

If you keep reading the thread, you'll see an UOA from Schaeffers at 325,000 miles since Gene accused Blackstone of faking the lab tests because the wear on my old 7.3 was just too low and consistent for him to believe. At least 250,000 of those miles were Rotella oil changed around 5,000 miles. I took delivery of the truck at 19 miles, so I know everything that's been done to it.

For fuel additive I've run Stanadyne mostly. B20 (sometimes B5 up to B99) when I could find it (except winter). I've also used Howe's and the occasional DK.

I'm another who is not impressed with, or ever buys Lucas stuff.

Been using this the last two tanks ... POD at CSK Auto

Does what it says, quiets down the injectors and IMO is very cost effective. Can't comment on other claims such as double fuel filter life, etc. I've tried almost everything out there and did not see a lot improvement, just dollars going down the tank. To each their own.

I've run rotella since I bought the truck in 2000. Tried motorcraft and it used a quart to an oil change. Switched back and uses none. I change every 3000 or so, basically constantly towing with it so the trucks working pretty hard.

I've really not ran any additive in the fuel at all. Just sent my injectors in this winter for the stage one upgrade and they were in great shape yet. 148xxx miles.

Just wondering some of the reasons you guys hate Lucas so much?

I am asking because like Ryan I am running the Lucas stuff and rotella t6 synthetic. I am new to psd but from what I heard lucas was a really good product. I am with Ryan, I want to run the best stuff I can? If the stuff is that bad I dnt want to use it. The main reason I am using it is for lubrication.

I have to say I like the information I am getting, hope to see more. I am also going to be throwing out my bottle of Lucas after seeing the test results that were put up here by powerstroked.

They've been around for a long time, but instead of keeping up with technology and producing the best products, they have chosen to keep the sales volume up by living off of brand recognition and advertising.

Videos

Scroll about half way through the page and you'll start to find the videos comparing the lucas products.

I run most any diesel oil and filter and change it every 3000 miles.

I add a quart of 2 cycle oil or a gallon of biodiesel to a tank of fuel.

Read where tests have showed 2 cycle oil and specific types of Biodesel help the injectors and lube the rest of the system
