I removed the oil plug on my recently purchased 88 last night to change the oil. the plug had a very crusty, brittle gasket that I need to replace. About the only place open on a Sunday within a 100 miles is bomgarrs, essentially a tractor supply store. What would you fella's suggest I look for that they might actually have?
I haven't used those gaskets or washers since I bought my truck. Clean the plug well, put a 1/8" thick layer of ultra grey silicone around the lip of the bolt. Allow to dry while the oil is draining and you are replacing the oil filter. Once you are ready to reinstall, take a rag and clean the oil pan drain area well. I let mine drain for 15-20mins so drips are not present. Seat the bolt, crank it tight, wipe excess, fill with oil. Less problems with leaks this way and never issues finding some random washer.
I get a new seal every so often at Carquest. I just bring it in (of course, by now I have 1 extra on hand. The first time you just ask for one), show the guy at the counter, and he grabs one from behind the counter for like $1 or something silly cheap like that.
It's a nice washer too. Metal ring with a rubber seal.
