Plugged Oil Filter

My engine is full of crud, and it keeps plugging the oil filters. is there anything I can use to clean the engine out?

I've heard of using a specific type of diesel oil, has all kinds of detergents that can handle all the crap diesel leaves behind.

Just change the oil and filter a few times. Modern oil has good detergent qualities. Try two or three oil and filter changes at 1,000 mile intervals.

How often do you normally change the oil? Usually 3-5,000 miles is optimum.

Would this be a problem with the EGR system allowing exhaust gas into the crankcase? I've noticed the same problem but not a severe as you mentioned. My oil sender is blocked and it will stay at 0 on very cold mornings.

You don't say what climate you are in. If you are in a warm climate, do a few quick changes using Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac or Shell Rotella. They are loaded with detergents, but are heavier oil than you are probably using.

If you are in a cold climate, change a few times with Mobil Drive Clean in your favorite weight. Also, drain the oil when the engine is piping hot. That way the contaminants are churned up in the oil and will come out. Preferably drain overnight, because the crud is the last stuff to come out.

Good luck,
Doc
