every once in a while, the other day being the worst, the tranny will not engage right away, not in D, and then not in R either... go back to D, wait about 20 secs, and it then acts fine.... but it's was a scarey 20 secs!
it only happens when it's cold, and hasn't been running... the fluid does need a change, and it will slip sometimes when it's warm in first gear, but not often. it's like a reddish brown color right now.
is it time for a new tranny? or should I try to do a gentle flush on her first to see if that helps... or just do a new filter and new tranny fluid for that... some people say it could make things worse, some say better....
Yes they were/are.
The general census here on the A4LD was to put fluid in to the fill line then check it in gear, Adding 1/4 quart of fluid & rechecking, Repeat until slippage is gone.

I have an A4LD tranny that I am willing to part with if you need. It only has about 600 miles on it. The truck I put it in blew a head gasket and I am not willing to screw with it anymore.

As mine seems to have a slow leak, about a quart in a year maybe, can I overfill it? How much can I overfill it safely? Right now it is about 1/4 inch above the full mark on the stick hot in park after a 20 mile drive and it is not causing a problem.
Then it's fine. You have to understand that as the fluid heats it will expand & get thinner. Also how/where your van is setting is it level or at an angle makes a difference on how it shows on the dipstick.
As long as it's working OK & there is no slipping in gear then you don't have to worry about having too much fluid.
Just hope you don't have a Tranny that has the Fluid puking syndrome, Pours fluid out your front seal when you put your tranny under a load like pulling a trailer over a distance. You can do a search here and find where all this info has been discussed before.
