Hey guys, I'm in North Dakota work'n and I had just taken my truck out of 4x high to 2 wheel when it just stopped workn. No popn sound or anything. I tried Putn it back and forth in all gears & shiftn in and out of 4x too. I believe it in the transfer case, but not sure. It's very muddy here and we got astorm move'n in, so I haven't had a chance to crawl underneath. Just wonder'n if anyone has had this or a similar problem. I could use some info. Thanks
If your transfer case not kicking in, you should be able to spin the front drive shaft while parked...
If the shaft is unable to turn, then it is probably your hubs are not working, probably due to lack of vacuum..
Thanks for the Reply Clint. When I got it towed back to the bunk house, I could run the Tranny Selector into any position Park, Reverse, etc, and it does absuloutly noth'n. It won't even grab park. Im really stumped on this. I'm woder'n if it's the Selector switch on the transfer case that went out, and it put the Tcase into a nuetral position. Again I don't know this for sure, but it seem's like the only logical conclusion.
Did you check fuse #17 under the hood..(30A)..(transfer case shift motor)..3rd one down, on the left from the top..
If the fuse is good, you might want to check the motor..

I haven't had a chance to check the truck out. Work'n alot of hrs rightnow. But I too am lean'n towards the motor. All I can figure is, that when the motor went out, it thru the Tcase into a disengage mode, It's just real confusing to me, because the truck should just be stuck in 2 or 4 wheel drive and unable to switch to either, but still be drivable. I was drive'n in 4X, then switched to 2 wheel drive, drove about another 40 yds, then the engine just reved up. I thought I had accidently thrown it into Nuetral. But again, it just stopped work'n all together with no warning, no clunk, chatter, grind, slippage, noth'n. Really crazy. I've never heard or read of this happen'n.
There are only 3 positions if you have ESOF, 2 hi, 4 hi, 4 low, there is no neutral. I know this as when I was having issues with mine, I took the motor off the xfer case, put a 9/16 wrench on the stub, and shfted it maunually.

Yeah this is someth'n I was gonna try, but I just don't feel like get'n under the truck in freez'n weather. I was hope'n someone would come on here and tell me that it was just a matter of chang'n the motor and it would be good to go, then I guess at least I would know what to do when the weather was better. I appreciate all the advice. I'm gonna crawl under there tomorrow and try to manual switch the motor one way or the other.Yeah I know that there isn't a Nuetral position on ESOF, again it's just puzzling to me how my truck is act'n like if it was a manual Tcase that has been thrown into the Nuetral position. Well I'll let ya'll know if I get under my truck, what If anything I find. I can't find where anyone else has dealt with this either. No, the drive line is intact with no issue's either.
Hope its something obvious and easy, but best i can guess right now is the torque converter/flexplate let go, or something in the tranny, not sure how else it could just let go. I assume you tried to go back to 4x4 with no luck?
Edit: i am assuming your working the oil patch in ND, if you have a long shift change etc, let me know, i could meet you in Billings if you can get a hook on it to there, I have shop tools available there.

Yeah Tom, I tried switch'n it back into 4hi, 4lo, park, etc. I even shut it off, and restarted, and noth'n.. Well if it's not rain'n, tomorrow which I doubt because it already started rain'n, I'll try to see what if I can figure it out. We have a snow storm move'n in on Monday, so I'm think'n I'm really screwed here. I still have another 3 weeks here before I drive home, so I hope whether permit'n I can figure it out. Thanks again.
On edit: Yes sir work'n here in the Oil patch in Killdeer. My father In Law Gerald Glenn lives in Billings. I thank you Sir for the kind offer of your tools and your shop. I hope it turns out to be someth'n simple though. I'll let yah know what I find out.
it is also my father inlaw that has the tools in Billings, I have a full shop here 2.5 hours west of billings, but his is fully available as well. He is no longer able to do much because of age, but the gear is there, and I am there taking care of their house and truck all the time, they would welcome company in need any time, like my self. Let me know how it plays out, I am off fri - sun most weeks.
Hopefully when you look under the trunk you will find that during that 40 yards you drove something hit the selector mounted at the tranny and that is all that got screwed up and left the tranny in neutral.
do a search on tcase not working. This sounds like the same problem that Kwik had when he lost his T/case. seems like the shift fork wears out or something. might be time for a quick t/case swap.
