Ok guys just how easy or difficult is it to rebuild an NP 435 tranny? Mine seems to have way to much side to side play in the input shaft so i am seriously considering doing a rebuild on it rather than buying one from the JY and having no idea how it has been treated or mistreated.
Plus i have plenty of time on my hands right now since work seems to be non existant and since the JY wants 300 bucks for a used 435 i figured i would go ahead and purchase the rebuild kit from JBG. So if anyone has rebuilt them i would love any pointers and any advice you all can give me as well as any pictures if you have them. Thanks in advance everyone.
I did mine about a year ago and it wasn't too bad at all. Sounds weird but I bought a 4x8 sheet of OSB and nailed a slight border around it. Laid it on my shop floor. Pull the tranny and take it to the car wash and wash the 30+ years of crud off. I put it right in the middle of the OSB and started disassembling it. You'll have parts that come out of both ends I used one 8' side for one shaft and the other side of the OSB for the other. Misc. went in the middle on the side it came out. wash, clean and paint it all up and put it back together while swapping out the old parts for the new. this was my first tranny ever and wouldn't think twice about doing it again. The most important part is to stay organized... The OSB worked great for keeping the parts contained and not rolling off and hiding! You'll understand when all those rollers bearing come apart.
As for transmissions these are easy to rebuild. Lots of room in the case. Buy a rebuild kit, it's cheaper in the long run. After you replace the bearing on the the input shaft, the front collar has multiple gaskets used as shims to get the sight amount of play forward and back on the input shaft. I think you can find specs and parts breakdown on the internet.
Don't remove the granny gear from the mainshaft. It has two small anti-rattle clips keeping it snug to the shaft, and can be a pain to reinstall. This is the largest gear on the mainshaft, and it's at the rear of the transmission. It's removal is not necessary for a rebuild or disassembly of the transmission. You can remove it if you wish, just make note of the position of the clips and the gear to the shaft.
