Actually, acronyms are words made up of the first letters of a longer name and then pronouced as a word themselves, such as "RADAR" from "RAdio Detection And Ranging" or "SONAR" from "SOund Navigation And Ranging."

Other examples of acronyms:

ASDIC -Anti-Submarine Detection (the "ic" was non-sequitur to maintain wartime secrecy)
CIWS - Close-In Weapon System (pronounced "sea whiz")
FIAT - Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin)
SWMBO - She Who Must Be Obeyed (pronounced "swim beaux")
ZIP - Zone Improvement Plan

Most of the things posted in the thread so far are abbreviations or initializations, not acronyms. MILF, SNAFU, FUBAR, DINK, and PICNIC are some of the exceptions.

Just sayin', in my humble opinion (IMHO), as a former secondary school English and reading teacher (a very long time and a couple of other careers ago).

WFA (without further ado), now that I've caused at least one or two groans in the crowd, my additions to the abreviation and initialization list:

A/C - air conditioning
A/T - automatic transmission/all-terrain
BIL - brother-in-law (the one you don't want borrowing your tools)
CRS - can't remember s**t
FIL - father-in-law
FOFL - falling on floor laughing (don't see that one much anymore)
IOP - in original package/packaging
LMAO - laughing my *** off
LMFAO - laughing my f***ing *** off
MIL (mother-in-law; all the in-laws also being acronyms)
NIB - new in box
NOS - new old stock
OCD -obsessive compulsive disorder (like those annoying people who correct spelling and usage)
P/S - power steering
R/H - radio and heater (when they weren't common)
ROTFL - rolling on the floor laughing
ROTFLMFAO - rolling on the floor laughing my f***ing *** off

And one of my favorites, often used at the bottom of work orders:

OCP - operator created problem

Thanks Joe,

I'm sure someone is rolling their eyes by now. Not me tho. My DW is an English major, a Spanish teacher for twenty years, certified K-12, holds a Masters Degree in Technology, is a year book advisor, Speech and Debate Coach, and holds a coaches certificate to coach basketball. She also teaches at the local community college. Trust me, I've been corrected a lot in the 31+ years we've been married.

I'm not allowed to use "DW" nor other similar terms of endearment--honey, sweetheart, yes dear, darling, etc.--even if I said them while holding a dozen roses and a box of chocolates in my hands, because no matter the tone or occasion, I'd be accused of being snarky.

So I just order the roses and/or the chocolates and keep my mouth shut...
