driving to work and noticed more steering effort .now pump is making noise.never have had a pump go bad. wondering if others have had this happen and if the pump was bad.thanks for any replies in advance.
anyone out there know anything about the steering system in a 2005 F150,trouble shooting etc.feels like manual steering exept wheel doesn't want to return to center. was making noise yesterday but not today.wouldn't seem like enough miles on vehicle to be wear(48000)
Check the fluid level, and the serpentine belt. If those are good, then perhaps the pump has gone south. Let us know. If the belt is broken, there may be an ideler or tensionar pully that froze up and ate the belt.
i have a 2004 F-150 stx 4x4, with 108,000, that happened to me 2 months ago, and now its doing the same the last 2 days, belt is fine, and fluid level is full, when im turning, feels like need to put more elbow greese into it, but wheel does slowly return to being straight, have no idea to figure out if the pump is going out. IHOPE NOT!!!!!! if you here anything or figure anything out, please let me know as well, and ill do the same!!!
Was the noise coming from the pump, or was the noise when you tried to turn the wheel? If the sterring shaft that goes from the cab to the rack has seized u joints it will be harder to turn.
Have you ever flushed the fluid? I had mine changed at 80k and wow what a diffrence. I do have 35" tires but the fluid was pretty dark when I had it changed.

My steering tightened up a few weeks ago. A few applications of PB Blaster penetrating oil on the 2 u-joints between the firewall and the rack solved the problem.
Gentlemen:
noticed that when I backed out of the driveway, the steering was hard, almost like a bent shaft, , was hard steering ,would not return to center by itself, acted as if it were non-powered.as I drove thr vehicle it seemed to ease up and returned to normal.Local major parts supplier (whom I trust with my life) claims its the rack , as he has sold many for that year and make. This morning , the steering felt fine, could it really be the rack, or dirty fluid,( how does it get dirty),does anyone have an answer as the price of a rack ,is anywhere from $250to 450 plus core.
thanks
