good day how many valve cover bolts does a 302 and a 351 windsor have? looking at a truck this weekend and just want to make sure its a 302 for sure as i need one for my 79 granada would like to stuff a 460 in but dont think its gonna fit lol if the owner is being honest it was rebuilt or bought new with only 40,000 miles on it now will be a good score for 500.00 for the whole truck
460 came in a lot of 79s, I have had three so far and I am converting a 302 one to a 460 today. You have to use 460 motor mounts to do it. Yes it is a close fit ,but well worth the gain in performance. None of them are easy on gas ,not enough difference for me to give up the performance i like. When i get to the shop i will check the valve covers for you if nobody lets you know. JIM
perfect thank you i just cant remember its being so long as my granada is buried under a car cover in 4 ft of snow and i cant get to it will check bac during the day thank you regurds joe ps that granada would be one h##l of a grocerie getter all right and that would make it easy as all my trucks other than my bronco are 460s that one is a 400m and if i ever have trouble with it it will be changed out but being rebuilt it should be ok
thats what i am trieing to find out if the 302/351 windser valve covers are differnt or how do i identifie a 302 for sure? the 351 is wider and wont fit my single exaust "y" in the granada
Sorry i never got back too you, got busy on the f-100 and forgot. I see you got the help on the covers,6 bolts on 302 and 7 bolts on 460 covers. The bronco you see in my avatar had a 460 in it when i took the picture . had it in there about 15 years before putting the 400 back in and selling it. The 460 that was in it is the one i am putting in my f-100 now. I had it in last year for a short time but never had the right mounts. now it fit's like it is supposed to with the correct mounts. I'v had 302s 351w,351m,400s and 460s. I love the 460,none of the others compare to it. You can make a 400 perform with a few changes but i still prefer the 460.
Look at the thermostat bottom bolt. If it is below the back of the timing cover and hard to get to with a wrench, it is a 302. If it is above the timing cover and easily accessed, it is a 351 windsor. I got my windsor out of a 75 granada ghia. It will fit with just a little mod to the exhaust. Sounds like a good score for you.
An easier way to differentiate a 302 from a 351 is that the 351 has a honkin rib cast into the block between the block and the distributor hole. The deck height on a 351 is also about an inch taller.
Granada? Whoa.. that thar is an excellent disc brake donor for early Mustangs/Falcons/Comets.
