Question Need starter help - 351m

Hi all,

we have a 1981 F150 4x4, 351m, 4-speed. We bought it about 4 months ago, with a bad ring gear (P/O put in wrong starter). We replaced the ring gear, new clutch and new starter. The starter has always been kinda noisy but worked fine, but now it makes a horrible noise when cranking (the teeth are engaging, not grinding) and eventually locks up on the flywheel and won't turn. I can roll the truck in gear and the starter pops loose, and we repeat the process. I don't want to replace the starter every few months, any ideas on what's wrong?
Thanks,
Colby.

Question

Hi there, My name is Wes and I have a 1984 F-150 351, but Automatic truck and I had a starter problem for almost a year. I had to replace starter about every month or so. I tried new solenoids, bigger cables, more ground cables and I even put a new flywheel in the truck. I even tried to ground the starter directly. To make a long story short nothing worked. Finally went to napa one day and spoke to the main man there and he did some research on his computer and come to find out, they made our replacement starters( you get at other parts houses, auto zone, advance and etc) 9tooth to fit more than one application. On his computer there was a part number something dash 10. So we order that starter just to see if that would help or not. Recived it a couple days later, put it on and I have not had a problem since (going on 6 months now). It was a 10 tooth starter not a 9 tooth. So you might want to check that and see if that will help you.

I'm new here, as far as posting goes, but I'm not real sure about the way (ctubutis) acted towards my first post. I thought I had found a great ford site for die hard ford people. Just been trying to feel things out and see what the site is all about. That's why it took me so long to post a reply, but when I did I get this.
Thanks Wes. 1984 F-150 H.O. 1985 coupe, 1970 mercury cougar eliminator 428cj, 87&88 ford ranger. This is why I came here (ford people), but not a good welcome. This is my 3rd post by the way

Yeah, , I'm sorry, guys, I really blew it this morning, huh?

You see, I skimmed through the first post, then the first bit of the second - both from
new users - and I saw two people posting their problems in one thread, so I figured
here were two new people with similar problems but asking in the same thread, so I
split 'em out into separate threads without actually *reading everything* in the 2nd
post.

When I later realized what I had done (after I actually read the 2nd post), I merged the
two back together into one, and here we are. I was at work and couldn't really take
much time.

I'll go delete the extraneous stuff and remove the extra title I had added (for the
separate thread) and make the thing as coherent as possible
