Just curious if anyone with more experience than me can recomend a good spark plug for my 77 351m, i went to ford and their parts list didnt go that far back heh. The Guy said that they did have them though and that the part number was SP450. Although my Chiltons says the part number is ASF-42B. does anyone know if i should get the motorcraft ones or have any opinions on aftermarket brands? and does a gap of .44 sound right?
Just go to the local parts place, AZ,AA,Napa, etc. Tell them what you've got and get the cheapest copper plugs they have. "Premium" plugs are for premium cars and don't tend to do well in SB ford engines.
Only plugs I use in my rigs (8 of them, even the 521 stroker) are Motorcraft coppers...and never had an issue with them. The .44 gap is for a stock engine...with my mild builds I usually jump to a .48-.50 gap.
I firmly believe in motorcraft coppers. I side gap them till they start misfiring and close them back up by .005
the only place I would run a platinum plug is in a vehicle that I absolutely hate changing plugs on, like a v6 minivan or a camaro with an lt1 (I can change the engine in my capri just as fast)
I had a chart in a book here, but I can't find it at this second, but it list only one other material that conducts electricity better than copper, and it wasn't platinum.
