everything is state dependent. your best bet is to head over to your DMV and talk to them your gonna get alot of different info here i can speak only for my state
i would go talk to the DMV about that im fairly certain that is not right or else everyone who buys a pull behind camper would have to be CDL qualified. the rating on the truck means little to nothing it what you get it registered for that the DMV in missouri we can go up to 24,000 without getting commercial tags
The catch is that RV's are exempt. It's STUPID and CRAZY!! How many people do you see driving those big Motorhomes or pulling some 40' 5th wheel camper on the weekends, but drive a Honda Civic during the week? Talk about scary! Sit in a campground and watch some of these rigs come in....you'll know what I mean. It's even scarier watching these guys try to back a trailer into their site... This truck and trailer is a little longer than my Civic!
Here in MA, anything with a GVW of 10,001 or more pounds needs to be USDOT inspected and run the DOT numbers.
Also, the truck needs to be registered for the amount of weight you're moving...truck and traielr combined.
It probably is different in your state, best bet is to talk to someone in your state who has gone thru this before...then talk with the DMV...
Here in MA, the registration, inspection, and weight laws are so poorly written that the inspection stations all interperet the laws differently and inspect however they think it needs to be done. Friggin STUPID! I agree, it would be great if all states had the same laws...it would be very clear then.
oh man trust me ive seen the prius idiots trying to drive a 40' camper trailer combo..... depending how close i am to them its either really scary or hilarious lol
Must be a per state thing... none of our farm trucks have DOT stickers or inspections, even the 4 semis.... The semis and trailers get an inspection done by us, but thats it.... and they all have farm plates.... maybe thats the difference?
