Some good reading here: What plates do you guys run? - Page 3 - PowerStrokeNation

So from what big_stroker says, the trailer is tagged for it's own weight.

everything is state dependent. your best bet is to head over to your DMV and talk to them your gonna get alot of different info here i can speak only for my state

The catch is that RV's are exempt. It's STUPID and CRAZY!! How many people do you see driving those big Motorhomes or pulling some 40' 5th wheel camper on the weekends, but drive a Honda Civic during the week? Talk about scary! Sit in a campground and watch some of these rigs come in....you'll know what I mean. It's even scarier watching these guys try to back a trailer into their site... This truck and trailer is a little longer than my Civic!

Here in MA, anything with a GVW of 10,001 or more pounds needs to be USDOT inspected and run the DOT numbers.
Also, the truck needs to be registered for the amount of weight you're moving...truck and traielr combined.

It probably is different in your state, best bet is to talk to someone in your state who has gone thru this before...then talk with the DMV...
Here in MA, the registration, inspection, and weight laws are so poorly written that the inspection stations all interperet the laws differently and inspect however they think it needs to be done. Friggin STUPID! I agree, it would be great if all states had the same laws...it would be very clear then.

The pickup only needs them when towing a trailer, right?
