I have a 02 V6 Escape that is spuddering and hesitating when accelerating. When I go to accelerate the engine sputters like it is not getting enough gas. My engine light has not come on and I put on a reader from a parts house and did not get any codes. The engine does not do it in park when I rev up the engine, only when driving. The engine does spudder a little while at a stop light. The transmition was rebuilt at 184,000 miles and I am currently at 213,600 miles. The tranny fluid is clean and the tranny shifts normal.
I replaced the air filter and a friend ran starter fluid thru the air intake, but the engine still hesitates and sputters on acceleration. There is no vacumm leaks that I can hear and did not notice smoke coming from the air intake manifold.
I love my car and got to make it last. Any ideas or do I need to be using a shop scanner?
I would remove and inspect the MAF. If it gets some dirt on it, it will make the engine run terrible. Also check fuel volume and pressure if you can.

Thought I would give an update. After i changed my air filter my car started shaping up (it was very dirty, stupid me LOL). I also changed my spark plugs, the COP boots and coils, and put in new air intake gaskets. After i changed my spark plugs I noticed the breather hose elbow joint, that connects to the plenum, was collapsing when the engine was running. I replaced it and no more additional problems. I even got 22 miles to the gallon after all that minor work!! I was only getting 19ish.
Thanks to this site, removing the air intake was a breaze!
