91 Ford Ranger Accelerating Problems
91 Ford Ranger Accelerating Problems
I am in need of some assistance. I am currently working/trying to drive a 91 ford ranger, 2wd, 5 speed manual tranny, 2.3l 4 cyl. It sat for two years in my parents back yard, I got it running and it runs not to bad at an idle. My problem is when i am trying to accelerate it starts to sputter and hesitate and miss to where i have to run each gear out to be able to try to gain speed. If i back off the gas to where i am just trying to maintain speed it will quit sputtering and just runs great, but i am slowly losing speed. I have put a new fuel filter on, running mid to high grade gas, fuel system cleaners. The check engine light does come on but it doesn't stay on. I called ford to try to get some help from them and they just wanted me to bring it to them. but i am trying to fix this myself. Any help would be greatly apprecieated.
hhmmm well u can try checking the intake, because if thats riped or torn it will through off the fuel mixture, and that includes the gaskets and tubing, You could try cleaning the throttle body as well, But keep running that fuel system cleaner, ow also check the fuel pump, you can check it by when u take off ur old fuel filter and you poor the old gas going the opposite way the gas flow through the filter, on ur hand or pan and look for little shards of metal if you see a lot then that could be a problem
Welcome to FTE. If you try to clean the throttle body, be sure to use the special cleaner to do it. Do NOT use carburetor cleaner - it will ruin the special coating used on the intake system.
Since the Check Engine Light (CEL) comes on, take your truck to an auto parts store such as AutoZone and have them scan the memory to get the stored codes. Post the numbers here and we can help solve the problem.
Also, check the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF), it may be dirty. Again, do NOT use carb cleaner. Use a cleaner specifically designated to clean a MAF.

i have gone to autozone and advanced auto and there scanners only are for 96 and newer vehicles. I did use gum-out carb cleaner so what problems and i looking at having now. or what do i need to do to correct that problem. Is it more than likely a fuel problem i'm having or could it be electrical at all. The truck has 212000 miles on it and all we have done is a water pump and clutch. thanks again and all help is apprecieated
Welcome to the site. You may also want to check the condition of the air filter and air filter box for any critter nest or debris. Also check all the vacuum lines for cracks, breaks, splits or for being chewed on. Some may also be hard or brittle with age and not seal good anymore when connected and need replaced. Check the spark plug wires for being connected securely and that they are clean on the ends, especially at the coil pack. It may not hurt to put new spark plugs in as well. If you used a different cleaner on the MAF sensor, you could try to clean it again with the correct type and see if it helps any. Check the fine wire sensor element it has, for being in one piece and still connected on each end. If it's not then it needs replaced. The sensor element is the part that needs to be cleaned but shouldn't be touched by anything but the spray cleaner. Some other types of cleaners leave a residue which won't let the element work correctly. Let us know what you find.
