I found 2005 ford f450 diesel with only 20k miles. it was owned by landscape company that went out of business. Is there anything I should look out for on this vehicle being 6 yrs old and only 20k miles? or would you stay clear of it?
is this truck a standard bed or mason dump?,.. i ask because my mason dump body has a steel tank with a gray coating, this coating began to flake off the tank and clog the fuel filters. replacement tank was 800$, i fixed the problem before any material made it to the motor, did the owner keep records of the oil changes and dates, type of oil used, filters ect.?
if it was sold as a frame job or sometimes called a chassis job with duel wheels in the rear and the bed is added later, yes, it may have a defective fuel tank. the new lower sulfur fuel seems to eat away at the lining on these tanks, in 2007 the epa set new limits and regs for all on road diesel fuel.seems it took ford till 2011 to correct the tank and make them out of poly, not coated steel. doesnt mean it isnt a good truck it may have some issues, if you get the truck at a good price and can fix it yourself or have a good mechanic to help it may be worth it.
how would i know if tank lining is flaking off, they are asking $17000 for truck looks to be in great shape but I am no gear head. any other issues i should look out for.
the only way to tell is to change the fuel filters, the truck may or may not show a loss of power when you drive and call for more fuel. ask the owner for service records, oil changes at least every 5000 miles , fuel filters every 10,000.do you know this person? how did they use the truck, did they idle the truck all day staying cool.. could be why he went out of business...did they use the truck for snow removal? did they over load they truck everytime they made a delivery?lots of qustions. a good place to look for info is the tech folder on this web site, if you know a good mechanic or have a dealer check the truck out it maybe money well spent.
I probably varies state to state but an F-450 in AZ is considered a commercial vehicle I have a friend that has a 07 model I believe and his tags are still around 1700.00 a year. You might want to check into it for you state.
I would offer 1k over nada "rough" trade in value. And just bring up the tank problem and the 6.0 fever. Those that don't own one de value the 6.0 below nada's lowest value.
both good points, Unreal & snorin. i know here in NY you might as well put a bulls eye. on your truck, because the DOT and other local enforcement have regular truck safety stops to generate money for the state which needs the money to fund other things.some of the tickets are in the 1000$ range sheesh.
